Suicide in The United States Suicidal thoughts are the process of thinking about killing yourself and committing suicide. The individuals who experience suicidal thoughts do not always follow through, but there are enough individuals that do follow through to make this a social problem. The Centers for Disease Control, provide data on the prevalence of suicide within the United States. The data that is presented is from 2015. During this year, there were more suicides than homicides by almost double. There were over 44,000 that committed suicide in 2015, causing it to be in the top ten causes of death within the United States (Suicide). Emile Durkheim is a French sociologist who investigated suicide and the connection to society using the functionalist perspective. He talks about solidarity being a component of suicide. The less people that an individual has a connection to the more likely they are to consider taking their own life. Belonging to a social group can increase the sense of belonging that people have in their everyday life. Social stratification is a factor of whether someone feels like they belong in a group or not. Social stratification is putting individuals into certain rankings within a society. One process of social stratification is socioeconomic status, which is a measurement of a persons standing based on education, work experience, and income. Socioeconomic status is something that separates individuals and can cause severe isolation between the distinct groups. The functionalist perspective focuses on how problems come from society and whether they serve a function for society. Changes in society, such as war or even an economic change, can affect the rate of suicide for a society (Risholm 2014). Different events caused people to either grow closer together or further apart based on the social norms during the time. One that is common is the requirement for training with teachers, counselors, healthcare officials, and law enforcement officials. This allows for these individuals to possibly notice the signs early and detect suicidal thoughts before an individual can act on them. Along with the training for individuals that work with people, there is also a national suicide hotline. This is a program where individuals can anonymously call and talk to someone about what they are feeling and thinking about doing. The hope with this program is that by talking to someone, an individual with suicidal thoughts will feel like there is someone that cares and rethink their actions. There is also the policy of data collection that allows states to understand the patterns that are occurring and the prevalence of suicide in their area. If there are states that know the statistics of their area, they are more likely to be able to solve the problem. While these policies work on preventing a certain amount of suicides, there is still a large amount that are being committed throughout the nation. The most helpful policies would be the ones that focus on making everyone feel like they have a place within society and that their loss would be felt greatly.
