Raised in an intercity school district, service and community interaction were always promoted. Volunteering became more than a graduation requirement to me, it became a hobby. Accumulating countless number of hours, I found a passion for helping others. Exploring the University of Pennsylvania, it is apparent that social service both locally and internationally is a core element of the university. In Penn Engineering specifically, the Engineers Without Borders (EWB) have contributed to communities throughout the world. The first time I heard about the EWB chapter at the University of Pennsylvania was during the summer of 2011. Hearing about the chapter’s plan to create an irrigation system in Guatemala, captured my attention. Hearing about the project and how it would improve the standard of living for those living in the village, influenced me to contribute more time social service. The projects that EWB in the University of Pennsylvania take on, inspire me to take my own interest in activities such as tennis, mock trial, and photography to my community, assisting others further de...
...Bridgewater State University was a complete success. For some that she presented in front of, it could have been the first time that they have ever heard of her community center in Tanzania or the first time they have ever heard of Tanzania. Relating to her overall purpose of being at the university, her message was received well by many. As she said, she wanted to make people more aware that volunteer work can help inspire people to make a difference in their communities. She has successfully presented a case were two people exiled from a country; in which they were brought up, and moved to a country that is 180°different having success in creating a stronger community and were able to have that community become worldly known: with the lack of technology. This is a remarkable and evident accomplishment of the organizational structure utilized for social services.
Over the course of my college career, I have involved myself with diverse organizations and have led and participated in various philanthropic activities with these associations. Wor...
Throughout its years of activity, the Peace Corps has provided indisputable support to developing countries worldwide. Volunteers work in schools, on farms, and in the community to teach much-needed skills in the areas of technology, environment, agriculture, education, and more. Over twenty-thousand volunteers were sent to Latin America within the first three decades of the programs formation. There, they focused on community development and helping the poor people solve local problems. Although budget cuts re...
In the Dominican Republic, there is a great need for education, and financial support for poor families. Providing the people with a good education, and teaching a trade to the head of the household could help to solve these needs drastically. Not only this, but the service project could be used to be a good witness for Christ to these people. A service project to the Dominican Republic could not only solve the lack of education, and help impoverished families for a short time, it could provide a long-term solution, and benefit this nation greatly.
Growing up, my parents and other influential figures around me modelled the importance of community service through their continual volunteer work and dedication to improving the world around them. Whether it be participation in a well-attended project or persistent contribution to a helpful organization, those aforementioned individuals were formative in guiding me towards a path filled with opportunities for having an impact on my community.
While I have taken part in several service projects in the past, the chance to expand my interests in helping the community is quite appealing. Performing community service is something that I enjoy, as it allows me to discover new interests while helping someone in need. The opportunity to perform community service, surrounded by fellow Academic Magnet students who support my enthusiasm for helping others, is a key aspect of why I want to be a part of this
When I began this class, I had never had any experience or knowledge on non-profit organizations. After reading the chapters and doing the project for CHASI, I began to realize that non-profit could be my niche. I chose to pursue a degree in criminal justice, because of the many job possibilities, but I never would have imagined non-profit being one of those possible careers for myself. I was raised under the philosophy from both sides of my family, that if you give, you will get in return, I believe this so much and I have witnessed it personally throughout this semester. I have given my time and effort to raise money for people, who I don’t know and who are less fortunate than some, and although I may not receive money or items back in exchange, I get to feel a sense of pride, which is more than enough. So when I went to the nonprofit career website and looked through the job listing, there were many that I was interested in but only a couple that I could actually see myself doing.
Kim, in the United States, grades are not the only factor in evaluating school applicants and job candidates. From Rhodes Scholar selections to college applications, excellence in other areas such as leadership, volunteer activities, sports and arts is equally important (p82-90). In American schools, students are encouraged to do volunteer work. So much so that many schools have guidelines for how much time students are expected to spend serving in the community. Children learn the value of giving from an early age. Volunteer activities is one way Americans feel a part of things and share the goal of serving and contributing to build their communities. From neighborhood watch programs to environmental issues, Americans do not wait for the government to initiate action: they take action to bring about the changes they desire. Therefore, Americans view volunteer work as a way to teach children and young adults values such as cooperation and teamwork, dedication and work ethics, equality and social justice, leadership, generosity and compassion for
The relationship between young people and nonprofits can be the start of a significant change in our community, and should be a reciprocal and powerful educational experience. An open-minded and encouraging flow of communication between organizations and community members can be the launchpad for the social and environmental change organizations talk about and try for every day. Together, we can make change – not just a semblance of idealism, but reality, as well.

My ardent desire to acquire knowledge has motivated me to pursue higher studies at graduate level, and to take up a career in research in industry. I have taken this decision after carefully considering my academic background, profound interest in research and strong aptitude for problem solving.
All of us are born with a blank book of life to fill, how we frame our lives depends on our decisions and circumstances that shape us. With 7 billion people living in this world, every book differs from the other and it is fascinating how every mind is so uniquely alike. From the beginning of life in the womb of the mother till our last breath, our brain is constantly functioning without us realizing the intensity of complex tasks it takes up.
To a person walking down the street in downtown Indianapolis, he may be a hero because of his occupation, a civil engineer. What can a civil engineer do that is so heroic? For one, he designs the cities’ sewage system. People in the city cannot comprehend how vital it is to constitute a correctly piped sewage system. His designs transfer the cities’ waste to a safe place, so it can decompose in peace, and not endanger our health or our environment. He is not only protecting the Earth from harmful materials, he is also keeping our water clean a...
