Raised in an intercity school district, service and community interaction were always promoted. Volunteering became more than a graduation requirement to me, it became a hobby. Accumulating countless number of hours, I found a passion for helping others. Exploring the University of Pennsylvania, it is apparent that social service both locally and internationally is a core element of the university. In Penn Engineering specifically, the Engineers Without Borders (EWB) have contributed to communities throughout the world. The first time I heard about the EWB chapter at the University of Pennsylvania was during the summer of 2011. Hearing about the chapter’s plan to create an irrigation system in Guatemala, captured my attention. Hearing about the project and how it would improve the standard of living for those living in the village, influenced me to contribute more time social service.
