Communication has been an important component of human lives throughout history, mainly due to the significant role it plays for individuals when they are publicizing their ideas or in developing relationships with one another. The various ways of connectivity have grown greatly within the past decade, thanks to the major developments made in technology. The most popular and possibly the greatest impact made in the world of communication was the development of social networking. Social networking is considered to be an online community of individuals that have common interests who use a particular website to communicate and share information and other resources. It is common nowadays to see families or friends together, but instead of communicating with each other, they are engaged on social media using their cellphones or tablets. Due to the advancement and capability of today’s phones, it has lead to an easier and faster way to connect with others using social media. Andrea Nakaya argued in her book Thinking Critically: social interaction, “Mobile technology has made each of us ‘pauseable’. Our face to face conversations are routinely interrupted by incoming calls and text messages” (Nakaya, 9). Conversations between friends and family have become limited because of the constant updates one receives when they are connected to social media websites. It is also believed that networking is causing a superficial way of communication and can perpetuate closed-mindedness and prejudice. Cyberbullying is the harassment and abuse of an individual through a cell phone, on social media websites, or anywhere online. In the book called Bullied in Cyberspace, Anne Rooney states that “According to a Cyberbullying Research Center survey of a group of 10- to 18-year olds in the southern United States, the most common forms of cyberbullying are mean or hurtful comments and online rumors." (Rooney, 16). This abuse can make an individual feel isolated and attacked, leading to a depression and often self-harm. Rooney also states that “[One] might use social networking sites to post nasty messages or embarrassing photos or videos where friends can see them” (Rooney, 6). According to a Cyberbullying Research Center survey, they discovered that three million kids per month are absent from school due to bullying, and 20% of kids cyberbullied think about suicide, and 1 in 10 actually attempt it.
