Social life and making friends on US university campuses After reading the Nathan’s article, I came to realize that Nathan’s keeps her principle focus on how foreign students intermingle with American students and the distinctive type of relationships that they procedure. It is quite strange to some of the foreign student’s that Nathan has interviewed about how non-committed American students are to the foreign students because Americans students do not socialize as much, tending to spend more time alone and how they will make small talk rather than being close friends or let it evolve into more. At that point, Nathan turns her center towards the difference between a relationship and a friendship between American and foreign students.

Based on her research which she had done, she claims that most foreign students don’t have that many American friends and the foreign they claim that American students are not interested in becoming friends with foreign students. She gets more in-depth into this topic and presents the reader how rather than just becoming close friends, American students tends to make small talk with foreign students and tends to focus minding own their own businesses. Also, in her research, she found that in America if you don’t have a hobby it’s very difficult for you or anyone to make friends especially if you are foreign students. Which I think is very true, even from my personal experience I feel like this is probably the most accurate statements. I remember, when I started college last semester, few my classmates were going to watch Temple Football match, due to my family matter I wasn’t able to attend, afterward, they started to become less interested in me or interested in talking with me. Which indicates that If you don’t like the similar things it’s hard to get along with American students. For instance, in her research, she interview students from different countries and asked them about their opinion on American students. As one student from Germany expressed that once a young lady asked "How are you?" and when the German understudy answered he wasn 't feeling too well, the young lady exchanged subjects and imagined that he never specified he felt sick. The German understudy went ahead to say that she was most likely attempting to be minding, however in Germany that would have been swelled into a discussion. Foreign students also found it difficult to make new friends among American students, and usually turned to other foreigners. Social psychology is a scientific study that studies how people think, feel, and how they behave under the influence of other people (Aronson, Wilson & Akert, 2013, p. 2). Thinking about what social influence really means, we tend to think of a person who tries to persuade another person to acting a certain way. It can be a form of peer pressure, like taking that first puff of a cigarette, or it can be conforming to popular societal views, such as obeying the law of the land. Fiction is a great way to learn about social psychological perspectives. Watching popular theatrical films is the perfect way to learn because it illustrates the application of many perceptions within the subject of social psychology.
The life of a college student is really amazing and diverse. In fact, a person can expect to live with people from different cultures, background, and histories that it is a mix of diverse multicultural experience. Even more when a student can talk with another student from a different part of the world with totally different culture, this was my case when I interview my friend from Nigeria.
Because of this, Steve Duck of University of Iowa refers to women’s studies as “understudied relationships” (Duck 1). In his book, Under-Studied Relationships: Off the Beaten Track, Steve delves into the complicated world that is friendship between women. He reveals that even the best of relationships, more often than not, will “dissolve due to geographical distance”, especially during the transition from high school to college (133). However, Duck claims that this occurrence during young adult transitional periods is “more detrimental to male friendships than female friendships” (133). He explains that, “men’s inability to maintain distal friends may be due to a lack of awareness about and skills to utilize effective strategies that maintain a [friendship]” (184). This argument implies that though males are invested in their friendships, they do not express as much emotional interest in these relationships as their female counterparts. While distance may seem challenging for women to overcome, they collectively put more effort into preserving their friendships than men. Duck further instills this concept by explaining that “women’s same-sex friendships tend to be based more on intimate and emotional discussions than men’s” (186). Men, Duck argues, lack the depth in their friendships that women possess, and, for this reason, have difficulty sustaining a friendship that is met with the strain
There are two type of friendship: homophilic, friends because of same identity, or heterophilic, friends because of interest or proximity (Maxwell, 2002, p 268). Because of an influx of immigrants, Millennials are surrounded by immigrants. I have been in this country for almost three months now. One of the biggest challenges is getting along peacefully with the native population. To Americans one of the most important things is to make sure that no one gets insulted or hurt and that everyone is heard. Some would go to the extent of not revealing their true opinion, in order to avoid confrontation. In some group discussion decisions, if reached at all, are made after making long, tedious conversation about the topic at hand. While there are some merits to this kind of behavior, other aspects of interpersonal aspects are lost, such as frankness and being open to one another. Sitting among other international students enhances these observations by listening to the so-called “outsiders” talk amongst themselves. On one occasion a fellow student tried to explain something to his friend from another foreign country that he had different opinions from him on a certain subject, talking and describing the matter and “beating around the bush” as they say, when all of a sudden the listener said,” Just say what you think – don’t be an American.” I was amazed that someone noticed or thought the same way I did.

American students have been such a question mark for the international students, their way of living and thinking is way different than any international student and this is noticeable. Students from all over the world notice a difficulty in dealing with the Americans and mentally understand them. Therefore, Rebekah Nathan argues that in her article “As Other See Us” and discusses the differences between the American and the international students. Moreover, she uses different evidence based on students from different backgrounds and cultures. Nathan goes over opinions and stories that happens with the international students in the US and what they think about these situation, which they considers weird in the eyes of the international students.

A student have the chance make a friend from from another culture by taking the same class and studying together. By going to college the students will build knowledge not just about the subject that they are taking, but also they will build knowledge about the different culture which they will know by involving with the international students in study groups or project groups. I remember when I had to do informative speech in one of my classes. I chose my culture to be the topic of the speech. I informed my classmates about different facts about my culture. My classmates could not stop asking me question about my culture, my environment, and my country. My speech helped the student to understand my culture better and know more about my country. When I first went to college I couldn’t speak with American student because I had a thought that my language will not help me understand them or be a friend with one of them. Living in another country is a difficult experience for many people. A common feature of people living in a foreign country is finding them Gathered together in restaurants, discussing about their home and their experiences in the foreign country. Moreover, these groups are not all from the same home country. Often, the interests that landed them in a foreign country are enough to connect them in building the foundations of friendship, like studying same major. However, the only thing that you can see obvisely is fear. As a Saudi student in USA I can say we often have to deal with many administration issues that may even result to the cancellation of one’s citizenship. Like getting USA Green Card. There is a fear of living in another country that never goes regardless of the period that one has lived in a foreign country. However, the interests that landed them in a foreign country, including education and business. It’s the same even the student didn’t come from same place. in fact that they didn't came from the same mother country. In life we come across many people. Some will hate us while others will adore us. The ones who hate us can be referred to as enemies and the ones who show us adoration are referred to as friends. There are three types of friends. They are the aquaintinces we make in school, the friends we loose as one grows, and best friends who may stray, but never too far away.
We do not make friends because they are useful but the bond of friendship, once it grows stronger and stronger has a number of positive aspects. There are certain secrets that can only be shared with our friends only. When we are facing a difficult situation in our lives, only true friends come forward to help us overcome all the difficulties.
Making new friends can be intimidating, but it’s definitely rewarding. After all, friends form a big part of our life. They are the ones who walk through life together, share our ups and downs and joys and pains. Without friends, life wouldn’t be the same at all. We wouldn’t be who we are if not for them.
