What is silica?

Silicon, the second most abundant element after oxygen on the earth, is also responsible for stronger bones and luxurious hair. It is a necessary element that the body needs to strengthen bones, maintain youthful skin, and to help grow stronger hair and nails. Silica is not to be confused with silicone, which is a form of silicon that is used in producing glass products, optical fibers, lubricants, and breast implants. Silicone contains a different chemical bond than silicon and it is has no nutritional value to the human body. Silica is found in several forms, ranging from liquid to gas, but dietary silica, or orthosilicic acid, is the form that is used by the human body.

Just as silicone is often used as a lubricant in various industries, the body uses silica as a lubricant for the connective tissue, or collagen, and arteries. Silica helps the body maintain its flexibility by lubricating the joints. Without silica, the arteries would become less flexible and the collagen levels would be depleted, resulting in wrinkles, hair loss, and brittle nails. In addition to providing arthritis help, it also is necessary in maintaining circulation and lung health by keeping the arteries flexible and helping to repair damaged lung tissue. Silica is a synergistic mineral, which means that it needs the presence of other minerals to experience full potency. In order to get the full benefit of silica for strong bones, silica needs to be added to calcium and vitamin D. Silica enhances the effects of those two minerals, and it reduces the severity of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

The body’s need for silica increases as it ages because the aging process depletes the silica levels. That is one of the reasons for wrinkles, and some doctors speculate that this decrease is also responsible for hardening of the arteries and even an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Silica not only keeps the body flexible, it also protects the body from aluminum, a heavy metal that is found in deodorants and other products. If you maintain a healthy diet that contains silica-rich foods, you will enjoy a healthier, more flexible life along with silky hair and smooth wrinkle-free skin.
