"Holocaust" is a word of Greek origin meaning "sacrifice by fire". But in the English language, the Holocaust was the most horrible genocide of approximatley six million Jews by the Nazi regime and it's collaborators.

In January 1933, the Nazi's came into power in Germany. They believed that Germans were the superior race, and that the Jews were inferior as well as a threat to the German racial community. It was not only the Jews that were deemed "racial inferior":Gypsies, the disabled, and some Slavic peoples. Other groups were targeted based on their political, ideological and behavioral grounds. For example, Communists, Socialists, Jehovah's Witnesses, and homosexuals.

In 1933, the Jewish population of Europe was at nine million. By 1945, the "Final Solution" was put into action. The Nazi's had killed nearly two out of every three European Jews. As well, the "Eutanasia Program" was put in place. Around 200, 000 mentally or physically disabled patients and 200, 000 Gypsies had been murdered.
