Main reasons why students push themselves to attend colleges
Nowadays, many students attend colleges or plan to attend. But why do they want to attend college? Is college necessary for them? As we all know, it is highly competitive to get into a college in Hong Kong. Do these students who attended college become competitive after they graduate? Do those students who did not attend college become disadvantaged in this society? Actually there are many students attend college just because they think they have to attend, although there are many alternative career paths for them. In my opinion, there are three main reasons for students to attend college---------------easier to get a job, become more respectful and pressure from people nearby.

Despite many students are clear about their future paths, there are also many students attend college without reason and treat it only as a goal or task. Many people are proud of being high-educated people. Therefore many students think it is not bad to attend college. In Hong Kong, we need to choose our majors when we apply to colleges. And it is not easy to change our majors after getting into the colleges. So we need to decide what we learn in University in such a hurry. These students do not have enough time to think about their majors and future career and they cannot change their majors if someday they know what they want to learn. Although education is important that almost all the countries encourage people to study, it does not mean everyone should go to colleges. Education is necessary but college is not necessary for everyone. For those students who are unnecessary to attend college, they cannot learn much in college. They may choose a major they do not like at all and sleepwalk through their college life. It is useless for their future career and wasting their time. If they use these four years to do other things instead such as working or anything they like to do, they may learn more from them. So everyone should be aware of college is not for everyone. College can’t teach us everything’s. For example college can’t give us the job experience, only give us the education of the knowledge, and I believe their all lot thing need to be learn in the society. Many people who get a college degree but can’t find a job, which mean they waste there youth and their parent’s money to support their child go to college, and even can’t find a job after a college
The argument about if college is worth it or not has been one of the biggest arguments throughout the media for decades. Students suffer a lot from the debts that they get from college and also the amount of studying that they do in college and when they graduate they ask themselves “is graduation from college really worth all the money that we paid and all the work that we have done?”
Some students would argue that a college education is not a vital aspect of the future of children because it is too much schooling, costs too much, and it is not needed for their future. I want to go to college for the wholesome intellectual stimulation and to get more involved with my community. College will be my last opportunity to do so before I enter the work force. At college I can be intellectually and academically challenged; I will be able to learn with friends who are as dedicated to learning and the pursuit of knowledge as I am. My goals in college are to acquire the skills that I need to lead a successful and productive life, to expand my knowledge of the world, to step out of my comfort zone, and to become more proactive.
However, the question that does stand is if a college education is right for every high school student. From early education to secondary education, the belief that one can go anywhere from here and achieve whatever they set their minds to have been pounded into students heads. With these statements, there is always that underlying idea that these goals can only be achieved with the help of a college education, but this isn’t always the case. Counselors and teachers have been scouring the halls and classrooms in high schools encouraging the prospect of college while neglecting to offer other paths and choices that could fit a student better. Almost every person in this country can agree that school is a remarkable honor and something that is definitely not frowned upon, but the pressures to only look towards and pursue college could get in the way of what is best for a certain individual. A majority of people these days are planning or are going to college. These people have many reasons for going to college. The option of going to college is a major decision and there are many factors that are considered in making this decision. One of the many reasons of making the decision to go to college is to receive a bigger salary. Another reason is for the opportunities that become available from going to college. People also decide go to college to be better prepared and successful in the future.
A college education gives a person the opportunity to be successful in life, either financially or morally dependent on the goals that they set for their life. They will choose a college that offer programs for the major of their choice, where they will specialize and receive a degree. The decision to pursue a higher education will give the opportunity to earn a better income over someone who does not have a degree. College is more of life preparation course that will help make sure a successful career. If a person pursues a career in engineering, physics or mathematics their curriculum would include more liberal art preparation courses, in order for them to earn their degree, so someone pursuing a degree in these types of careers are attending college for job preparation. On December 10, 2009 at Hamilton University in Clinton, New York, college professors debated current college curriculum (Liew). They talked about how their college could make a leap from being good to being great. At the 22nd American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges conference held in Long Beach California on November 14, 1996 the topic of changing curriculum was discussed (“Mich”). The University of Louisiana, Lafayette, is eliminating its philosophy major, while Michigan State University is doing away with American studies and classics, after years of decline in enrollments in those majors (Zernike). The purpose of a college education is to meet the student's liberal art’s needs so that they can compete and understand the connection between a degree and a job that will enable them to compete with other world economies, give them a well-rounded education that will enable them to earn a higher income, and retain a lifetime full of knowledge.
As the numbers of college graduates employment have increased for each years, many people have being debating that whether everyone should have college education and whether college education still worth it for everyone. Some people found that they did not gain the benefits that they wish from college education, and some people found that they still could not find the job they desire after they spent all the money they have on college education and being in heavy debts. My purpose and goals in attending college is to make something of my life. It is a good thing. No one wants to be a nobody. But sometimes it takes time in order for one to realize this. & nbsp; Upon graduation from high school, I, like the majority of others high school graduates, had no clue what direction my life was heading or even what I wanted to become.
In the article "College is a Waste of Time and Money", Caroline Bird explains why higher education may not be the best choice for high school graduates. Bird writes that students do not attend college because they want to, but because of what others expect. College is merely the trend in today's society. It is an escape from the real world. Students may be shuffled into a system that is neither financially nor academically beneficial.
As high school students, most of us were taught the dream of going to college from the importance that it has. The real life examples from our friends teach us the importance of going to college. If you drop out of college you may lose yourself, your family, and your friends. One of my friends dropped out of college because he had a bad friendship. So, they convinced him not to go to the school, but when he grew up he realized that the college was the most important thing in his life. There is a lot of pressure put on high school students to go to college. Junior and Senior year of high school all students hear is ‘where are you going to college’ and ‘what are you going to do with your life’. Such questions can be overwhelming and cause a lot of stress for students. It’s been put into everyone’s minds that in order to be successful you absolutely have to go to college and get a degree. Not every successful person went to college. The concept of education has a significant meaning. It enables one to take control of knowledge and apply it. It is education what prepares the mind to comprehend and learn important ideas. A higher education is very important for an individual's success in life. It offers students skills that prepare them mentally, physically and socially for the world of work later in life. A higher education should not be a choice, because it is the foundation of our society. It helps students with their personal development, provides economic growth, helps students understand and interpret the world around them, and affects individuals’ job positions. It will promote new interests, economic stability, help students understand others, and prepare better individuals for the future.
It is true that there are things that need to be learn in everyday life, but that does not necessarily mean going to college will not advance that knowledge. Not only does attending college advance one’s mind, 69% of college students say it is very useful in helping them grow and mature as a person(Pew). It tells that people who attend college will mature more and have the knowledge of financial means that is being dealt with everyday. When asked why college is important, 39% say it is to help a student grow personally and intellectually(Pew). Obtaining a higher education will weigh on progressing one’s education.
People should think thoughtfully before making decision about going to the college. Today attending to the college become a pop culture for many Americans. Many people go to college without thinking why they should go to college and do college really help them for the employment. We understand that many high paying jobs and careers require a college degree; for example, engineer, doctor, lawyer and other careers. Also, studying in the college should like critical thinking, reading and writing. In contrast, if people do not want to do a lot of hard studying in the college and do not choose high education majors, they should not apply to the college because it waste their time and money for them. In sum, people should be concerned about how they can be successful in their occupation.
