Race And Ethnicity Throughout history Race and Ethnicity have played a very important roles in society. People tends to get confused about what is Race and what is Ethnicity.William Hoynes stated that Race is a category of people widely perceived as sharing socially significant physical characteristics(257).So when you ask people what race are they. They tends to tell you their Ethnicity. William Hoynes also stated that Ethnicity is ro shared cultural heritage often deriving from a common homeland(257). Over the past 18 years since I was born Race and Ethnicity wasn 't important to my life until I came to America. Back in Jamaica when I use to live there when we was doing paper work are filling out important document they never have the part where you have to pick your Race and Ethnicity because Jamaica believed in “ out of many one people”. They only have the part where they ask you for your nationality which is Jamaican. Where it is only two color exist in this world if you are not black then you white .Some white people think they are superior than people of color they think they are the only one that can be successful in life . People of color is always been treated badly in society. For example Trayvon Martin , Eric Garner and Michael Brown are all man of color in america who have been killed by white cops and neighborhood watcher and the jury did not give the people of color justice. Jury did not give these men of color justice because he feel like that they didn 't have enough just and yet still they get to walk free and live there life like nothing happen. The conflict between race and ethnicity came up throughout the time I administered my questionnaires. In the questionnaires, many people questioned what they should respond to for the question which referenced their “race” or “ethnicity”. Some people saw it as a division and how the terms can be used as a negative term or a positive term to label a group of people.
Even though Black music such as blues did not end oppression, it helped rehabilitate the oppressed by creating a new identity through music such as blues. The entire social structure that we live in is affected by at least one construction of race. However, I would like to examine the concept of race first. There is no gene that is common to all black or white people; it is not biological. If race was “real”, then racial classifications would be constant all around the world, but someone considered black in the United States might be considered white in Brazil. Through research of DNA samples, scientists have been able to declare that race is not biologically constructed due to the similarities between human genes.
