At a very young age I realized I had a love for children. This love was a result of me being around my young cousins. It was so intriguing to watch their behavior on a daily basis. They always yearned for attention, and used many smart tactics to receive it. Throughout the years, I never found it to be a problem to respond to their needs. In fact, it was a joy. However, when they were sick, I knew I wanted to help them, but did not always have the answers. I was able to comfort them, but my yearning to help ran deeper than comfort. Therefore, I wanted my career path to enable me to help sick and well children. Pursuing a career as a pediatrician would fulfill my desires of being able to work and advocate for children, and gaining my Master’s through this program would be a positive step towards that goal. …show more content…
I interacted with the children through hands on experience by taking their vital signs, running lab tests, and trying to soothe their fears of coming to the doctor. Helping the children was gratifying and the confidence they felt in me was reassuring that this was the field I was meant to pursue. It also strengthened my desire and longing of becoming a doctor in the area of pediatrics. My desire and motivation will help me persevere through the challenges that it takes to become a doctor. When I think about being a doctor, I think about my love of children and the exciting adventure of learning new skills and going into an unpredictable territory in the medical arena. Although many career paths offer the opportunity to work with children, the relationship that doctors develop with their patients is a special journey. I began my college career unsure of the path ahead of me. I knew I had a passion for medicine, however, I did not know which direction I would take. With the expansive amount of options offered within the fields of science and medicine, it was difficult to narrow down exactly what direction I wanted to take. I gained some clarity the summer of my sophomore year when I stayed at a close friend’s home, whose father, a practicing Medical Physician, became somewhat of a mentor to me. The passionate way in which he discussed the practice of medicine led me to develop an interest in pursuing a career as a physician. Although more than ten years can pass prior to the moment one first calls oneself a pediatrician, the hard work and dedication pays off when one saves the first life a helpless child. Throughout the long process of applying for school after school, obtaining scholarship after scholarship, and proving one’s medical skill with each and every exam, one must feel true bliss when grasping the newly received medical license in one’s hands. ...en who are there each week are incredibly inspirational, and they never seem to be discouraged, even though some of the patients have been there for five to six weeks in a row. I look forward to seeing their smiling faces each time I visit, yet I cannot help but hope they will not be there but will be at home the next time I visit. Since I was a child, I have always known I wanted to become a doctor, but I did not know what kind of doctor I wanted to become. Did I want to become a doctor to earn a lot of money and live a prosperous life, be respected in society, or so that I could simply help other people? The answer came to me not too long ago while I was volunteering at the Methodist Richardson Hospital. During my time in the children’s ward reading books with these children or even just talking to them, I felt a sense of fulfillment. Seeing these children with life threatening diseases, such as cancer, smiling happily as if nothing were wrong, living their lives as if they were not stuck in hospital beds made me just love them and their positive attitudes. Working with these children helped me realize that whatever I did in life would be focused around children such as them. The volunteer work I committed to at this hospital helped me realize the career field I wanted to go into, and it also taught me how important it is to keep the new generations yet to come healthy, and a massive risk factor that would risk the health of children is childhood obesity.
Like the general public, I assumed their only job was to aid doctors and perform routine medical procedures that they are trained to do. Unfortunately, it takes drive and effort that many people do not have, to become a pediatrician. A pediatrician’s job is a highly-skilled and interesting job because he or she has the privilege to deal with and help as many children as possible.
My career choice is to become a pediatrician. The question is: what makes this job so interesting or fantastic enough to be chosen? This job requires many sacrifices, skills, and strengths to endeavor the obstacles on the way to the goal. This particular job is also a very honorable and noble job in the sense of helping children with their illnesses and ailments. Luckily, I am very comfortable with patients, which made providing care very easy. I was not afraid to go into other patient’s rooms if they rang for help. I would try my best to help the patients; however, if I needed help I was not afraid to ask a fellow student or nurse on the staff. It is very important to be able to talk to patients and work as a team with fellow coworkers as it made the job easier. On the other hand, I need to go over mother and baby assessments to become more familiar with both. I was able to complete the assessments; I now need to do so in a timelier manner while ensuring I do not forget any key areas. Lastly, it is vital that I continue to go over patient teaching prior to clinical. Being comfortable with the patients made the teaching easier, though I need to become more familiar with all the material that needs to be taught.
In the future, I hope to pursue my career dream of becoming a pediatrician. Pediatricians can be identified individuals who specialize in giving medical care to children and adolescents between infancy to adulthood at eighteen years of age. I became inspired to become a pediatrician due to my immense love of children. Perhaps I have an innate intuition for taking care of people being that I have always felt that I excel at taking care of others. The idea of taking care of others truly makes me feel that I serve a purpose, not only to better the life of myself but the life of others. Therefore, I believe that becoming a pediatrician will help me combine the best of both worlds into a career that I adore and cherish.
Throughout my life, I have worked towards one goal which is to become a doctor. Medicine offers the opportunity for me to integrate different scopes of science while trying to improve human life. To better serve my expected patient population, I worked over my English and Korean language skills. I have come to discover that a job and even a good income, without another significant purpose, will not bring satisfaction. I planed to utilize my assets, namely my problem- solving affinity, strong work ethic, and interpersonal commitment, to craft a stimulating, personally rewarding career in medicine. I have taken stock of myself, considering my skills, experiences, and goals. I have looked to family and friends, some of whom are doctors, for advice. Because of this self-examination, I have decided to pursue a career in health care. The process has been difficult at times but always illuminating.
