Many children in hospitals today are not receiving the proper specialized care due to the fact that their bodies are not as developed as average adults, and doctors are not knowledgeable in the treatment of child ailments. While becoming a pediatric hospitalist requires many long hours of school and years of residency, the career provides a large amount of fulfillment because of the lives that will be changed and saved. As a pediatric hospitalist, there are a wide range of duties that must be completed for the safety and well-being of one’s patients. A duty amongst all physicians is caring for a patient’s illnesses. As a pediatrician, one must be involved in the physical, mental, and emotional upbringing of adolescents throughout every stage of development in good health as well as in illness. A pediatrician takes care of a child from a few weeks after birth to the age of twenty-one when the patient transfers to a new physician. The duties designated to all pediatricians is to reduce infant and child mortality rates, control diseases, make sure patients lead well-maintained lifestyles, and make easier the lives of children and adolescents with chronic conditions. Becoming a pediatrician would improve the lives of many children. The hours of many physicians are long and irregular as the job entails caring for many different patients who have different needs. While working in a hospital, pediatrics is collaborative specialty meaning one must work with other medical specialists and healthcare professionals to improve heath and emotional needs of adolescents. If a child has a heart condition, a pediatrician must meet with a cardiologist to produce a plan that would benefit the young patient’s heart. The two forms of “free money” are often given out by schools, the federal government, the state government, or different organizations. In order to obtain a scholarship or grant, one must do research and apply. Although more than ten years can pass prior to the moment one first calls oneself a pediatrician, the hard work and dedication pays off when one saves the first life a helpless child. Throughout the long process of applying for school after school, obtaining scholarship after scholarship, and proving one’s medical skill with each and every exam, one must feel true bliss when grasping the newly received medical license in one’s hands. A career in pediatrics will allow one to save the lives of young people who haven’t yet truly lived.
