In the school environment, it is always beneficial to build healthy relationships and have a wholesome rapport. The connection between schools, parents, and the community specifically has an essential role to play in the growth and development of its young people. In fact, they should all collaborate to encourage the welfare and learning of students. By involving parents and utilizing community resources, schools will be more prepared to handle student needs. The partnership will ultimately help children develop healthy behaviors and receive high-quality education. Research shows that students whose parents and communities are involved in their education are more likely to perform well academically, emotionally, and socially. Van Roekel (2008) reports, “When schools, parents, families, and communities work together to support learning, students tend to earn higher grades, attend school more regularly, stay in school longer, and enroll in higher level programs.” They go on to say that “strong school-family-community partnerships foster higher educational aspirations and more motivated students” (p. 1).
Plummer Middle School (Plummer M.S.) is an urban school in Aldine Independent School District (Aldine I.S.D.). The school’s 2015-2016 Campus Improvement Plans (CIP) reveals the student population is 35% African-American, 62% Hispanic, and 3% Asian, Caucasian, or multi-race. There is an 80.4% low socioeconomic status and English Language Learners (ELLs) represent 12% of all students (p.7). With the high percentage of underprivileged learners at this campus, Plummer M.S. is receiving local, state, and federal funding to acquire resources and operate the school. ...e ways to be participate in the school. There must be consistent, reciprocal, and significant dialogues to void any misinterpretations. Similar to the parents, volunteering is an effective responsibility for the community. The added assistance would help reduce the overwhelming amount of duties necessary to operate the school.
Ultimately, it is not enough to have a small group of people creating high achieving students. Everyone needs to be involved and on board. School, parent, and community partnerships must be well integrated with the school’s overall mission and goals. They should be completely invested in improving the students’ educational experience. To create any desired vision, it is important to understand it takes time and effort. By having focus and determination, educational leaders can create and sustain cooperative environments and successful schools.
