Persuasion in My Personal Life Persuasion is all around us. It is an attempt to influence us into changing our attitudes and behaviors regarding an issue (Myers). We are convinced to think a specific way, purchase certain items and services, and cast our votes for certain candidates. One persuasive method is fact-based. This is known as central route to persuasion (Myers). The other is emotion-based. This is called the peripheral route to persuasion (Myers). Based on central persuasion techniques, I have been persuaded that the minimum wage should not be raised to $15 an hour. First, central persuasion information taught me that businesses would be forced to make extreme changes if the minimum wage is raised to $15 an hour. Some businesses could be required to hire fewer employees to compensate paying for the higher wages. Likewise, low-skilled employees become expensive to keep, hurting marginalized employees with the least experience. Fewer employees being hired, with low-skilled employees being fired, means higher unemployment, and that becomes a burden to the American taxpayer. The worst case scenario is that some small businesses could be forced to close their companies for good. Furthermore, many who live in poverty may not work, and thus are unaffected from the increase. At one point, I believed that raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour was a tremendous idea, but once a conservative friend of mine gave me the facts and rhetoric on how it would hurt small businesses and the United States financially, I was persuaded to believe that the minimum wage hike was not a helpful idea. After viewing the facts, I was satisfied with keeping our wages at current levels. I realized small increases over the years is better than a large increase all at once. I am not persuaded with a peripheral route to persuasion usually, but if someone lays out the facts to me, a central route to persuasion can persuade me to change my
