Personal Statement Draft-3(2) An 11 years old kid lying on the ground in a dark room crying, shaking, and trembling with intense pain in both of his ears. The pain was similar to as if someone was hitting with some sharp object inside his ears and every time he would feel the shock of pain, he would pull both of his ears while enduring the pain. The pain would raise every couple of second and with each shock of pain, the kid would lose part of the hope that he had of surviving. He would experience so intense pain that he had never anticipated and all he could think of that “he is about to die.” This was the experience that I felt when I had a severe ear infection in both of my ears. This was the great opportunity for me to continue my education in one of the best countries and also was the great opportunity for me to explore life outside of my hometown, meeting new people, and experience different culture, languages, and lifestyles. After coming to the USA, my family went through various tough times. The condition of our life became so worse that we did not have enough money to buy food, clothes, and to pay rent. Because of the scarce of money, I did not even buy my high school graduation gown and was about to not even attend my high school graduation, until my high school decided to give graduation gown for free. Therefore in order to help my family financially, I started working on part time jobs such as sales associate and tutoring while attending full-time college. Although in the beginning I started working on part time jobs just for the sake of money but as time passed, I was able to appreciate the skills I got from working that is social skills, communication skills, presentation skills, team works skills, leadership skills, and the time management skills. These skills were very important for me as far as my personal development was concerned as I learned how to effectively communicate with people and how to teach students of different ages with different strengths and weaknesses. Because of the difference in the way teachers taught student, I had difficulty in catching up with students but as the time passed, I was able to assimilate myself into this new culture and was able to get the highest in Chemistry and Physics Advanced Placement classes. Even in the college, I tried my best to become one of the top students and as a result, I was able to get All Florida Academic Team award. This award was awarded to only thirty students in the Florida out of which two students were from the Valencia College. This was back in November 2007, in India. I was 12 years old. I was enjoying my normal life. But I didn’t know that my life will change surprisingly. One day I came home from the school and my parents made decision of moving to the United States. I was totally amazed at that moment. My parents wanted move so that me and my sister can have a better life, education, and opportunity.
There are a lot of reasons why I chose to pursue pharmacy as my career and they all point to the most important reason: pharmacy is a great fit for my life and is something I have become increasingly passionate about. It started when I was researching careers with my parents and my dad suggested pharmacy and, simply put, it sparked my interest because at the time it was one of the few things I thought I would not hate doing. A healthcare career has always been where I put myself in the future, mainly because most of my family members are in the healthcare field. However, I have never been one that could directly help the wounded or deal with anything gory, but am very intrigued by the growing science of pharmacy. Whoosh!A bed whizzed by, surrounded by about 6 medical personnel. “What’s going on?” I thought immediately with apprehension. I knew whatever was happening it was not ideal. Ensuring I was not in the way, I stood on my toes to see what demanded so much attention. To my astonishment, I saw a coin sized hot-pink little girl. She could not have been bigger than two quarters lying side by side.She was struggling! Even with all the procedures the doctors were executing to save her life, she was performing the most work.
For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to be an encouraging influence for others. As a child I was very shy and unsure of myself partly due to my overwhelming fear of others and feelings of inadequacy. Nevertheless deep inside I knew of my true worth but was afraid to show the world who I really was because I may be rejected. Those feelings of rejection kept me from being who I am and sent me down a dark, lonely, and destructive path.
My perseverance has prepared me for a career in medicine. The path towards becoming a physician can be long and challenging, necessitating the ability to endure. My ability to bounce back from setbacks and mistakes has solidified throughout my journey. One of the cornerstone experiences of my personal development occurred during high school. My determination led to me my graduating as valedictorian of my class, while balancing three varsity sports and several extracurricular activities.
Seven years ago, I moved to United States. Like anyone who had welcomed changes in their life, I had a hard time dealing with my new situation. It’s very difficult to fit in. In my homeland, life is harsh with the great gap of poor and rich, but my family got everything. Our lives were plentiful. We were not prepared to face the changes and challenges in the United States. My mother didn’t know how to get a job or how my two older sisters would get into college. It was not the same life we had in the Philippines. We left our homeland while my two older sisters were college students. My parents didn’t know how to help them to pursue their future here so my parents decided to let my sisters return home to finish their education. As they graduated with degrees and awards, the truth is, I sincerely respect and admire my sisters dearly, but I don’t want to end up like my sisters who finished college with so numerous awards and can’t get the job she wants because her degree is from another country.
Golf is a sport of confidence, honesty, and patience. It has taught me to practice these traits in my everyday life. I have more confidence in myself and I know that I will succeed. I am honest even when the truth hurts. I am patient with those around me no matter how annoyed I may be. My name is Evin Edens, and golf is my passion.
My best (and favorite) subject in school is Math. Ever since I was very little I have loved math, and worked very hard at it. When I do not fully understand topics I do extra problems to make sure that they become clear to me. I spend a lot of time working on math to make sure I understand the topics throughly. I have been in math clubs since 4th grade, and in 7th grade I represented my school at the MathCounts® competition where I won a two silver pins. I won the Virginia State Math Award in 7th grade, and this year I got an 800 in math on my SSAT. As a result of my hard work I am currently one of three students in my school to be in the highest math group, Precalculus.
Since the beginning of my academic endeavors, I have long cherished a dream to be a member of the social science research community, which gives our society progressive insights into human ecology. I began my undergraduate studies at Ramapo College of New Jersey with a passion for ecological justice and with the intention of majoring in environmental studies. Ramapo College’s progressive liberal arts foundation provided me with ample room to explore the multifarious array of social science courses. As I took more social science courses, however, my understanding of human social groups underwent a metamorphosis. As a result, I decided to pursue a degree in Social Science, with minors in the two fields I felt most passionately interested in, Women’s Studies and African American Studies.
Through my work in environmental compliance with petroleum retailers, I developed a strong interest in pursuing innovative solutions to environmental problems. My professional experience in environmental and health hazard mitigation at Environmental Compliance Services, Inc. was rewarding; however, I concluded that a career in the business-environment nexus aligned more closely to my future goals. With my skill set and interests, I aim to improve the processes and cultures of corporations and governments. In this career path, I have the best opportunity to positively influence the effective utility and conservation of scarce resources. An MBA at the Fuqua School of Business will equip me with the tools necessary to understand the needs of industry, commerce, and advancement—along with the desire to conserve the environment in a just way. I will gain expertise in business strategy, sustainability, and financial tools that, when coupled with my Nicholas School degree, will allow me to analyze private sector opportunities in the energy landscape.
I know that the Modern Foreign Languages Department at your school is well equipped and the fact that the inspectors in the recent Ofsted inspection pointed out that German consistently performs well proves that teaching and learning is highly effective. In addition, I am extremely attired in the experiment in which the most able Year 9 pupils are being prepared to enter GCSE French/German. I would very like to be part of successful school and department and I am convinced that I am able to make significant contribution to maintain and raise the present high standards.
It’s lucky for me to have parents who can support me to go to school and have a happy life. I see the miserable life of those people and I feel more than ever that I should work hard so that I’m not wasting my advantages. That’s the most important thing I learnt from this job.
