Professionalism in the workplace in many professions can be simplified into general categories such as neat appearance, interaction with clients, punctuality, general subject knowledge, and likability. In nursing, professionalism encompasses a much more broad and inclusive set of criteria than any other profession. Nurses specifically are held to a higher standard in nearly every part of their job. Nurses are not only expected to uphold what it seen as professional in the aforementioned categories, but they are also expected to promote health, wellbeing, and advocate for patients, but also continually provide the highest standard of care, demonstrate exemplary subject and procedural knowledge, and abide by the Code of ethics set forth by the American Nurses Association. This Code of Ethics includes the complex moral and ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, fidelity, honesty, and integrity.

Even as small children, we are taught to treat others as we would like to be treated, but as we grow older, the world becomes more complex, and the length to which we should stretch ourselves for others becomes unclear. Some people may believe that one must always put others first, while others put other people’s worries and safety far behind their own. The term ethics s defined as a set of moral principles that a person or society sets to govern their behaviors (Iqbal, Bhatti, & Zaheer, 2013). This definition is concomitant with the idea of knowing what is right and wrong and making a conscious decision to follow what is right (Paul & Elder, 2006). Conversely, a system of ethics is a set of instructions that govern an organization or particular social structure. This includes a combination of interrelated values that are devised as the most appropriate mode of conduct for a particular social structure (Paul & Elder, 2006).
We human beings live in a society. The society or the social world we live in is based on human cooperation. In other words, the individuals in a society do not live in an isolated self-centered world. The human interactive system presupposes ethical and moral standpoint from which we operate. My personal ethical system is based on “service before self” and “love your neighbors as yourself”.
To completely understand the ethics of care we must first observe what it is not. Care ethics does not encourage us to be inconsiderate when addressing a task or a person. It actually supports the acts of sacrifice and empathy for others in order to utilize the correct response when using the care ethics theory. Examples used in the text explained how people utilize and perceive care ethics in different manners both good and bad. When someone confronts a situation, putting their individual interest first assuming a reward in return for their act of care, in reality there demonstrating ethical egoism. Although we have individuals who use care ethics in a correct and moral manner implementing ethical virtue when dealing with their loved ones.
Although I have never really thought about how my own ethics came into play when learning and reading about all these other ethical principles, this essay is forcing me to ponder about where my guidelines fall in accordance with those that we have studied in class.

For my personal code of ethics I vow to judge someone based off of their entire character and not one single action, to respect an individual’s ability to self-rule, and to be honest and respect myself and others. Virtue ethics is very important to me because I believe someone’s character says the most about him or her. I think that a person’s actions help define who someone is, but those actions come from that same person’s character. I also believe that a single action that someone chooses to make shouldn’t define that person entirely. Whether the action is good or bad, it shouldn’t determine how a person is perceived. As per the American Psychological Association Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct (2010), psychologists must work to benefit others, safeguard the rights and welfare of others, establish trusting relationships, maintain professionalism, comply with ethical practices, promote honesty, correct any wrongdoings, positively contribute to the field, and treat others with respect and dignity. The code of ethics is a significant component in the modern business environment and all the professions at large. A code of ethics is intended to bring sobriety and instill integrity in professions. While codes of ethics exist at professional level, the values that truly shape the character of an individual emerge from an individual’s core-values, morals and beliefs. In this regards, it can be argued that personal ethics to a great extent shape both the personal and professional life of an individual (Paliwal, 2006). This paper discusses my personal code of ethics and also takes an analytical look at the code of ethics of my profession.
