Negatives Outcomes of Part Time Jobs Parents are wondering if it is a good idea for their children to get a part time job while in high school. By having a job your time dedicated to school decreases because the student has new responsibilities. A personal experience that I have that supports my point is of my best friend and I we attended community college for a year together. The first semester we have all classes together and we both were getting good grades but as soon as she got a part time job everything changed. We used to study together for classes because we had the same major but suddenly because of her job she did not have time to meet and work in the assignments. She made the mistake of putting her job as the most important thing and placing her educational goal in a second term. The results appear immediately when we took the first exam after she started working her grade change dramatically from earing A’s and B’s on test she began to get C’s. As a result of her grades getting lower, she started to lose motivation to school and started working more hours which eventually lead her to miss classes. She asked me if I wanted to work there with her but I said no because I wanted to focus on college and did not want any distraction. I saw her transformation from being an honor roll student to no caring about school to make the study short two months after she started working she dropped
Once a person graduates from high school they are left with a difficult decision, wither to go to college or not. Some families this is not an option, their kid will go no matter what, but many students do not want to go to school and have so much student debt by the time they finish that they will have to pay off that they decide that college is not worth it. Students spend four years of their lives attending high school. Going through high school is mandatory as it prepares them for college and strength to face “the real world.” Having part-time jobs has become the phenomenon among high school students and many students follow this trend as well. Moreover, there are some pros and cons attached with it. Though it may seem like working throughout high school is a bad idea, it could better prepare students for “the real world.” Although some people believe that the primary duty of a student is studying, I am of the opposite position. I strongly support the idea that high school students should work throughout high school. This is because they can earn money, become responsible and get experience.
I think that working at McDonald’s doesn’t teach high school students to save, but it depends on that person and how wise can they be to spend their hard earning money. Now, society has taught us that without education we cannot afford to make good money which is not always the case. Growing up not only did I hear it from my parents but I also have heard it from other parents, teachers, and old students. School culture and society culture has given us a point of view where we can’t get a decent job or feel like we will without a paper that will look good on our resumes. Summary: In the essay, “Part-time Employment Undermines a Student’s Commitment to School” by Laurence Steinberg, it explains how studies show that teenagers that work while attending school are more likely to loose their commitment to school. Steinberg tells the effects on students when they work more than twenty hours a week. His theory was that students are more susceptible to losing their interest in school, while working. They may have to work in the evening time, which can interfere with homework, sleep and diet. Steinberg also elaborated on how these students that work receive money that can make school seem less desirable. Also because they do receive money, they can use their extra money to become associated with drugs and alcohol.
But many low-income students not only have a full-time course schedule, they also have jobs where they work more than 30 hours per week. Approximately one-quarter of college students’ work while attending school and have both a full course-load and a full-time job (Carnevale, Smith, & Melton, 2015). Working helps students with the living costs as well as tuition and can help students learn skill sets that many employers prefer. However, there are problems with having full-time work while going to college.

Most kids that have graduated high school have never been educated on the subject of personal finance, so they don’t know things like how to pay bills, or even how to do something as simple as applying for a job. According to a family friend of mine, Ron Hart; who happens to also be an award-wining author and TV/radio commentator, believes that students in high school don’t learn anything about how to get a job or get prepared financially. He states that, “ Students should prepare for a job. Maybe, instead of taking a fifth field trip to the Trail of Tears site, do one to learn about real jobs in an area they might want.” Hart believes that most basic high schools aren’t teaching students how to become financially stable for their future, which can cause major issues. He claims that “few schools teach about the value of hard work, ingenuity, gumption and entrepreneurship. Those lessons are as rare as Donald Trump bumper stickers in the faculty parking lot.” Hart also goes on to talk about how high school does not prepare you for life the same way college will. There are so many more lessons to learn there that people are missing out on. College is very important due to the fact that it will teach students more skills about finance and job seeking that most high schools don’t. But, let’s say there’s a well educated thirteen-year-old, raised in a low-income family, who has plans on going to college. There’s no way their family can support him to go to college, and its funds could be over-whelming. The only way they could go to college is if they started saving at an early age. Therefore, if they got a job at the age they were at now, they’d be on their way to college by the time they graduate high school. Or, another example would be, if a teen wanted to get their first car on their sixteenth birthday. As you may know, many teens don’t get things handed to them on a silver platter, so they’d have to buy that car themselves.
