Everyone goes through many different experiences throughout their life. Some people have crazier experiences to remember than others do and it is normally common. Whether it is to happen at a young age, or older it can still happen. Some will remember the bad ones more than the good, or vice versa like myself for instance. In my lifetime, I have had many experiences, but some I remember more than others. I made the mistake of going out late on my graduation night. Once she arrived, we left for the beach. As time passed she want to go back home and me, just come over since we could not find a place to go walk at. Therefore, we turn around and head back to Dothan. I felt like she was starting to tire from driving, so I asked if she wanted to pull over, and rest, she declined. We continue driving, and I keep asking if she wants to make stops and what not she continued saying no, so I ask a few more times before I stop asking. So I fell asleep shortly getting tired out of the blue and when I awoke from my nap of a few minutes, I look over and she is asleep somewhat in control of the wheel. I go to wake her up and when I do she freaks out swerving into the median then, swerving out harder and we tumble for 30yards. I did not have on my seat belt during that crash I was the only thing keeping me seat by pushing myself into the seat. Thankfully, the vehicle landed upright, and I was able to force my door out. On instinct I instantly went to check on her making sure was okay, and at first, she was really freaking out on me hyperventilating, crying, and asking if I was okay. When I finally calmed her down the situation was a little better somehow my phone survived, and I called the police. A leading researcher at the University of Washington, Elizabeth Loftus, is specialized in the area of memory. She has recently discovered that when an occurrence is recalled it is not always re-created accurately. Loftus’ research revealed that instead, it is a reconstruction of the actual event. Newly collected information in relation to the topic being re-called can interfere with the memory you’re attempting to recall resulting in inaccurate recollection of the experience. If not be newly collected information it could be from other sources, such as the previous times you’ve told it, experiences from a television episode, a movie, or many other factors. You may have even experienced this yourself when you’ve been in the same place with another person for an event but have two un-matching stories of how the story took place and what occurred.

The definition of memory is two fold 1. “the faculty by which the mind stores and remembers information” and 2. “Something remembered from the past; a recollection” (Google Definition). The life of memory has three stages in which it is created. An event occurs in ones life it becomes encoded and stored in the brain. As I have been reading memoirs about memory for this class, each essay made me recall or even examine my past memory closely. However, the more minutely I tried to recall what happened in the past, the more confused I got because I could not see the clear image and believe I get lost in my own memory, which I thought, I have preserved perfectly in my brain. The loss of the details in each memory has made me a little bit sentimental, feeling like losing something important in my life. But, upon reading those essays, I came to realize that remembering correct the past is not as important as growing up within memory. This has been shown to be true on a relatively linear scale with the exception of our first three to four years of life (Fitzgerald, 1991). We do not always remember every event that happens in our life, but if we can remember a time when we did remember a memory that may now be forgotten, it is not really forgotten as the memory is preserved by a chain of memory.
In addition to postmemory being a bad memory, if it involves children it makes the memory seem more traumatic. A person always seems to remember the thing that happen to children and these events tend to stick in your mind a little more than things that happen to adults. I think the reason it is like this is because when you see something bad happen to a child you think that they are so helpless and defenseless so it sticks in your mind a little more.

Upon reading the essay prompt, I took a few moments to introspect. I thought back to every experience that helped mold me into the person I am today. As human beings, we are influenced by many aspects of our surroundings. Even as children, we develop certain attributes through observation, or through conditioning by our parents. These attributes may not be always positive, but the combination of both positive and negative qualities form the people we are today. No one is perfect; nevertheless, some are fortunate enough to have their strengths outweigh their weaknesses. I believe I am one of those lucky people.
There have been very few events throughout my lifetime that I feel have impacted or inspired me with such noteworthiness and that I know will change my outlook on the world and affect me forever. One of those events occurred when I traveled to Portugal, my parent’s homeland. From this excursion in 2007, I learned the importance of family, most importantly the distant kind. It provided me with a totally different perspective on the world and how large and extended one’s family can really be; even across cultures and continents. I felt so fortunate learning this lesson at a young age and growing to appreciate the ideals I was brought up with as a child. The family I have in Portugal has always been there; however, their faces have aged and are blemished with the passing of many years and difficult times. Some newer additions to the family have started to become a part of the modern Portuguese workforce.
