Born on April 15, 1452 out of wedlock to a prominent attorney notary and a young peasant girl, Leonardo da Vinci was raised by his father and spent his early life on his father’s family estate. During these years, da Vinci did not receive much of a proper education beyond basic mathematic, reading, and writing skills. Around the age of 14, his father sent him to apprentice with Andrea del Verrocchio, a sculptor and painter in Florence, after recognizing the possible potential of Leonardo himself. At the age of twenty, after six years of perfecting his technical skills such as metalworking, carpentry, drawing and sculpting, Leonardo became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke. “The Last Supper” is said to be “one of the greatest masterpieces of all time”. The painting shows a portrait of Christ’s last supper with his disciples at the exact moment that Christ announces that there is a traitor among the disciples and each of their own personal reactions. Unlike many other paintings of the last supper, Leonardo chose to include Judas in with the rest of the disciples, adding to the many reasons why this piece of work such a masterpiece. Though it is a widely known painting, getting a glimpse of it is not at all easy. Only twenty people are allowed to view it at once, and each group is only allowed 15 minutes to view it. Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous illustration is perhaps “Vitruvian Man”, which used both image and text in order to express the ideas and theories of first century Roman architect Vitruvius that formed the basis of Renaissance proportion theories in art and architecture. Even though he did not invent it, much of Leonardo’s legacy lies in painting as he popularized and helped to advance several different techniques that are still used today that he is still extremely closely associated with. His observation of the natural world was brought to life in his paintings and he documented with “great accuracy and detail”. Leonardo da Vinci was a famous painter, sculptor, and inventor that lived from 1452-1519. He was born in a small Italian town of Vinci and lived on a small estate that his father owned. Leonardo kept the name of the town that he was born in for his last name. Since his mother did not marry his father, he could not inherit his father’s land, nor did he have much going for him as a wealthy businessman. When people think of Leonardo da Vinci, they mostly associate him with art and paintings, such as his famous Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. Leonardo believed that art was correlated to science and nature. Da Vinci was largely self-educated and he filled endless notebooks with examinations and suppositions about pursuits from aeronautics to anatomy.

Leonardo was able to do so with geometric proportions in his drawing known as Vitruvian Man. His detailed dissections, along with many other methods, played a big role in the development of a new kind of painting style that made the paintings and their background give off a three-dimensional illusion.

To many, Leonardo da Vinci is one of the most important figures in Renaissance history. He was given the name “Renaissance Man” because of his large role and impact. Leonardo Da Vinci is a famed artist today due to his renowned painting of the ‘Mona Lisa’. In the 14th century, people of Venice would have known him as an engineer, people of Milan would have known him for his Last Supper, but only the people of Florence would have seen his whole character. Da Vinci is known as the archetypal Renaissance man, a man of “unquenchable curiosity” and “feverishly inventive imagination”. Da Vinci created many technologies and new innovations which were so advanced for his time and age that many scholars did not believe him. He contributed to civilisation through three main areas: art, science and engineering.
The two paintings and artists I am going to compare and contrast are "The Last Supper" by Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519) and "The Last Supper" by Jacopo Tintoretto (1518-1594). Although I am not a religious person, the sight of the painting by Tintoretto amazed me for the simple fact that it is so different from "The Last Supper" I grew up with.
