I define Leadership as a person’s ability to guide or shepherd a herd through/to a common destination – a destination of common beliefs. The leader possesses qualities/traits that can persuade others to follow them because they believe and trust them – regardless of their “human” traits and imperfections. The herd trusts that they will stay on course to the common destination. In my career…in my life I have been exposed to a handful of exceptional leaders that have influenced me in positive ways. For me, it took time to ascertain who those good leaders were – mostly because of my tendency to perform long and drawn-out analysis of their traits before forming a conclusion - typical ‘C’ personality (DiSC). My vision of a leader – he or she carries behavior traits/abilities to motivate and/persuade the team; the team trusts the leader because they are Leadership Philosophy 3 M.A. Monroe honest, follow through on tasks, and are forward leaning. The leader sets the example – walk the walk. Leaders are not afraid to ‘get their hands dirty.’ With all of this, the herd or team will be more productive and willing to bleed with them…go the extra mile, to complete an objective. I would like to say that I emulate this philosophy, but there are behaviors/skills that I need to hone: Ask for feedback on how my actions affect other people’s performance (Model the Way). I will request quarterly feedback from peers, and junior Sailors, through electronic means or meetings to discuss their thoughts on how my position could better support our command’s mission and team members; Experiment and take risks, even when there is a chance of failure (Challenge the Process). I have the tendency to not expand my subject matter expert radius. I will expand that radius and involve peers outside of my
