The concept of gun control is an idea that is as old as the second amendment. For many who support guns and believe that there should be lowered gun reform laws, often cite that people feel safer with the thought of a gun being present. While those who oppose guns, and believe that there should be stricter gun laws often cite that it is too easy to receive guns. Which allows criminals easy access to guns, causing theft, burglary, and murder rates to increase. But are these true? Are people really getting guns for protection? Or are people buying illegal guns to commit crimes? Living in a nation with the highest amount of guns per person, that increases every year, compared to other developed countries. The issue of gun control will be one, With fewer guns, the amount of crime and murder involving guns will decrease, as well as accidental injuries caused by misuse of guns will also decrease. It is now known that “classic” criminals aren’t the only ones that harm people with the use of guns. According to a blog, written by Susan Milligan, titled “We Need Gun Control to Stop More Than Criminals”, “Gun laws may not stop criminals, but they will save lives”. In this blog, she cites instances of when gun control could have saved the life of innocent civilians, but this did not happen. For example, a 12-year old boy in New Mexico, took a shotgun out of a musical instrument case. Then proceed to take it to school, and successfully shot and killed, two of his fellow classmates. The relatively easy access, of a child to obtain a gun, poses the question; Should there be mandatory stopgaps, requiring gun owners to keep their guns in a locked structure? Another instance, of a time, when a life could have been spared according to Susan. Is when a retired police officer, with a spotless record in Florida, shot and killed a fellow moviegoer, after he had refused to stop texting. Had concealed carry handguns not been allowed in this movie theatre. The victim, Chad Oulson, would have been able to go home to his wife and It provokes emotion because for some people they have a close bond with their gun. While for others, a gun might have been used to kill one of their family members. Or even a gun may have been used to severely injured himself or a close family member. On November 7th, 2014 Gallup released a poll on how Americans feel about guns. This telephone based survey, had 1,017 participates, with ages ranging from 18 and up. With a +/- 4% margin of error. In this poll, it was found that, six in ten Americans, said that guns made the home feel safer. Also “Most survey respondents report that the gun in their household belongs to them personally (30%), as opposed to another household member (14%). This means that about one in three people who have a gun in their home are not personally owners, but are aware the gun is there.” ( Gallup 2014).
