The interview on Alicia Burke made me realize why I have a passion for nursing. By her going in dept on the personal part of the interview, I was able to see why nurses are so humane. Through this interview I was edified on how the West Georgia Health operates things. Moreover, it taught me that as a Christian I may end up surrounded by ungodly employees however, it is up to me to have interactions with them. The path to becoming a nurse may include sweat and tears, but the outcome is a joy that no one can take away. Alicia was very kind during the interview and only left two questions unanswered. As a nurse, it will be very salutary to keep my faith and relationship with God strong. Bible verses in general keep me motivated and inspired to keep my head up. One of them being John 15:12 which states “This is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved you” (John 15:12, King James Version). This verse drives a passion in my heart to care for others continuously. Even if I give up, I have to continue to care for others because as a nurse I am my patient’s comforter. I have an insatiable need to help those who can no longer help themselves. I now have a greater intricacy for nursing and nurses all around the world. Everyday nurses make it their duty to provide comfort, hospitality, love, care, and passion for each one of their patients. Nursing is not only my purpose, it is my passion. The nursing profession will continue to grow and increase daily because of the many people who want to be able to provide to those who need help. Nursing is a complex degree, so many different subsets and divisions that it is hard for the common person to fathom. Through the traumatic experience of my father’s illness, a positive and optimistic perspective of commitment to nursing career evolved. My journey of becoming a nurse and commitment of shining a bright light on another individual life has been my life long goal. I moved to the United States in early 1980 and with God help and guidance, I followed the nursing career and promised to make a small difference. During my first years as a nursing student, I took a part-time volunteered position as a candy-stripe and a part-time position as a nurse aid in a community hospital to provide relief and support to hospital staffs. Many people wanted to be a nurse because they earn good incomes, but not a lot of them know how hard a nurse has to work or what she/he has to go through. My understanding of nursing is that it is not as beautiful as it seems. Each day, a nurse should have expected to encounter many patients, injuries, or even death. Within all the chaos a nurse must remain calm and capable of providing health care for patients. There is a famous saying, “being a nurse is not about grades. It’s about being who we are. No book can teach you how to cry with your patient…” Being a nurse means that one must have the heart and passion in helping others. When I began this journey I knew that Nursing was all I wanted to do and in order to succeed and do well in nursing school, it was going to require a ton of devotion and sacrifice. Nursing school did not come without its challenges, not only did we have to deal with going to class, clinicals, studying for exams, but we also had to add in the factors of jobs, family, marriages, children, sickness and our daily life. Since I was in elementary school, a career path in the medical field always caught my eye. I would want to pursue a career as a nurse because I want a job that is inspiring, challenging, and rewarding; I want to be able to make a difference in people’s lives every day. My mother is a registered nurse and just from the way she talks about her patients, I can see how much gratification and fulfillment she feels from her job. From a young age, I have always wanted a job that would leave a lasting impression on others. After some research, volunteering, and years of thought in what career interests me the most in the medical field, I feel certain that nursing is a profession that will fit me well.
I have always had a passion for nursing. As a child, I watched my mother getting up early, putting her scrubs on and headed out the door for a 12 hour shift. She was always content, and at ease to go for a long shift and even overtime at times. I love the fact that after work, she would always come home, satisfied with the day no matter how hard it was for her. She would sit and tell my brothers and sisters how she enjoyed the conversations that she had with her patients and what impact she had on their lives that day. Listening to these stories as a child, I knew that I wanted to become a nurse and listening to the same stories and helping people, making their day feel better. Caring for people is a prerequisite for becoming a nurse. This can often be effortless and second nature but then there are other times where caring for someone is not always the easiest thing to do. You see it in the frustrated mom of the two-year-old who is throwing a temper tantrum in Target. Or the nurse of a patient who presses his call light frequently for seemingly insignificant things. Caring takes patience. With nursing, in particular, you need to feel called to the profession. You need to feel as though nursing is something you desperately have to do. I have always wanted to become a nurse since I was a little girl, seeing both of my grandmothers working in a hospitals and always helping everyone in need.
