Since I was in elementary school, a career path in the medical field always caught my eye. I would want to pursue a career as a nurse because I want a job that is inspiring, challenging, and rewarding; I want to be able to make a difference in people’s lives every day. My mother is a registered nurse and just from the way she talks about her patients, I can see how much gratification and fulfillment she feels from her job. Different departments and settings have different requirements, nevertheless “a master’s degree is the bare minimum anywhere… educational pathways exist, Master of Science in Nursing [or] Doctor of Nursing Practice” (Requirements to Become a Nurse Practitioner). Usually, many start off as a licensed registered nurse before transitioning to a more specific and advanced practice. There are a few prerequisites for studying to be a nurse practitioner. Completing and getting a nursing undergraduate degree is the first step, which may also be taken care of through accelerated programs. Then, one must become a registered nurse and get their graduate degree in nursing. Afterwards, one must get their Advanced Practice Nursing license, and lastly, get certified in the area or department they wish to focus in (Requirements to Become a Nurse Practitioner). Nurses always have to be in the know of what new information is being discovered, continuing their education, and broadening their knowledge. Growing up, I have always wanted to be a part of the healthcare field, but I never knew exactly what job I wanted to take part in, until I discovered how broad a nurse’s specialty could be. A Registered Nurse can work in any age group or focus on a certain system of the body. My mother works in the health field as a medical transcriptionist. I became interested in the health field by her many stories she shared with me while she worked in the hospital. She taught me a lot of different things. My family history inspired me as well to join the medical field. My grandma and great grandma both suffered from breast cancer and my grandpa suffered from throat cancer. Becoming a Registered Nurse has been my dream for as long as I can remember. This dream became real to me when my grandma was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time in her life. I now have what drives me to be a Registered Nurse and to learn more about the career itself so I can help people out live all the odds against them.
My passion for nursing comes directly from my desire to assist people. I want to be a nurse because I enjoy being around people and I want to be part of a team helping to improve a person's well-being. Being able to provide help to someone's healthcare plan is satisfying to me. During my childhood, my mother had got surgery on her knee. I did my best to provide care for her and assisted her with daily activities. Although I was a young child, I enjoyed taking care of her and was content knowing that my assistance made this process of healing easier for her. Ever since I was a little girl, my motivation to pursue a career in the medical field was evident. While other children my age watched Cartoon Network, I found more value in shows like ‘Trauma: Life in the ER’ and ‘A Baby Story.’ It wasn’t until high school that I decided I would become a nurse, specifically. I cannot say that I had a revelation or a particular experience that swayed my decision. However, ever since I began pursuing the career of nursing, I discover each and every subsequent day that it is what I was put on this earth to do.
A career in the medical field is always evolving, and always needing more hands. I knew from a young age that helping people is what I was meant to do, and from then on out every step I took was the way to a successful career in nursing. It is a profession that allows you to see people at their worst, all while helping them become their best. The most important task for nursing students is to create a clear pathway for our education, and to be sure to follow that plan accordingly. When choosing this career, I had to access my own strengths and weaknesses and really establish clear goals for myself and evaluate if I had what it takes to be a part of this diverse and skilled profession. I also decided not only not only do I need to set professional goals for this career, personal goals are important as well.
When people are asked why they want to become a nurse, they usually respond with an answer similar to, “It is just something I have always wanted to do”. However, for me, this was not the case. When reflecting on why I aspire to become a nurse, my answer resides in the rapidly growing job safety that the nursing career has to offer and the opportunity for specialization within this vast occupation. The leading factor that pulled me into nursing was the excessive amount of awaiting opportunities and advancements that are to be had once you obtain a baccalaureate degree in nursing.

I am pursuing nursing because it is a combination of helping and teaching others, applying science, and giving back to society- all while making a good, secure living with plenty of options. To me, the core of nursing is to help patients feel better physically and emotionally as much as possible. In my mind, nursing should focus on improving health and quality of life for patients, both by directly caring for them and by doing research and advocacy. My vision for myself is that as a nurse, I will learn to balance quality with efficiency, to take care of patients comprehensively, to be a good teammate, and to promote the integrity of healthcare.
Ever since I was in middle school I dreamed of working in the medical field. I realized nursing was the profession for me when my grandfather became terribly sick with lung cancer during my freshman year of high school. It puzzled me that one of the healthiest and most physically active people I knew could be afflicted by such a damaging disease. After watching my grandfather’s suffering and the pain my entire family felt from his death, I knew I wanted to go into a field to help others that are facing the same challenges. From a young age, I was drawn to the healthcare field, not because the amount of money doctors, nurses and other health professionals made, but because of the dedication and contentment I saw on their faces helping someone in need. Growing up everyone wanted to become a doctor or a nurse and as a little child being a doctor or a nurse was a profession many parents wanted their child to pursue as a career. A nurse is a caregiver to their patients they are responsible for meeting the physical and emotional needs of the patient, they are to be able to identify, prevent or treat an illness or disability. I have been interested in health care professions for most of my life, but more specifically with nursing. My interest in nursing has grown more this past year after I had a conversation with a nurse. She told me that she loved her job and that it was satisfying helping people everyday. She also went on to tell me that it was never boring and that interesting things happened very often. I have researched about careers in nursing and I believe that I would enjoy it because I think that it would be great to be able to help people. Nursing is much more than just a career. To me nursing is helping and bettering the life of the sick or the infirm. Nursing is the practice of providing care for the sick and is a healthcare profession that plays an integral part within everyday life of people around the world, yet many do not know that there is much more to nursing than just that.
Growing up, I have always had a particular interest in becoming a nurse. From experiencing, my young cousins and nephew being brought into the world, to feeling and seeing cherished loved ill family members fading away.
