The definition of Professionalism is: The conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person. Also the skill, good judgment, and polite behavior that is expected from a person who is trained to do a job well. Perception is defined as: The way you think about or understand someone or something, the ability to understand or notice something easily or the way that you notice or understand something using one of your senses. When you are a person in uniform these two ideas go hand and hand. It will be assumed you are a person of authority simply due to the uniform you wear but, will you also be perceived as professional as in a person who is trained to do a job well? The first few Court officers I came in contact with seemed very knowledgeable of the duties they were assigned, but when I came in contact with a particular female officer I immediately thought to myself “You are the reason I have gone through hell the past three weeks.” Her uniform was wrinkled, her tie tab was dirty, and her hair was down and not at all professional looking. My instant perception of her was that class 002 and all future Court Officer Academy recruits were being put through vigorous training and being groomed to eventually phase out Court Officers like this female I was interacting with. She might have been the hardest working most knowledgeable person on duty that day, however she didn’t look the part and therefore I had a negative perception of her and questioned her professionalism or ability to do a good job. On the other hand I witnessed a Court Officer in a court room who was very well groomed; he stood tall, and was clearly paying attention to all that was happening inside the court room. He undoubtedly looked professional, as if he commanded respect and was a person of authority. This was the perception all Court Officers should
