From a very young age, my parents instilled in me the habit of practicing good personal hygiene. They always told me in order to be my best self I had to ensure to care for my health through preventative methods. Unfortunately, many underprivileged families are not as fortunate to receive the same support and guidance as I have. Thus, when I started at the University of Florida, what I wanted to do became clear: to help disadvantaged communities in the healthcare field; more specifically, I focused my time in helping underserved communities understand the importance of preventative oral hygiene. My favorite organization to work for was Project Downtown because it gave me the opportunity to provide hot meals to help the less fortunate. Being able to prepare, cook, and serve hot meals for this service showed me the deeper issues within these populations. A major one being the lack of understanding about how proper dental hygiene could improve their lives. This further drove my intense passion to become a dentist because I am fortunate enough to understand that deleterious oral hygiene practices can lead to larger health issues. With the rest of my time left at UF, I was inspired to do as much as I could involving dentistry. Therefore, I shadowed at the Shands Hospital dental clinics where I had the opportunity to appreciate the importance of strong bedside manners, technique, and first handedly being able to see the lasting impact a dentist can have on a patient. Towards the end of my sophomore year, I further went on to fuel my passion for the art of dentistry by becoming a co-founder of Delta Delta Sigma Pre-Dental Honor Society at the University of Florida. This organization allowed me to share my passion and create a prestigious community of prospective dental students. With this opportunity, I also was able to educate children at local schools about the importance of good dental health care.
