As I started my new journey of becoming a dental hygienist, I came into the program with no background of dental. I came into this program with an open mind and willing to embrace new concepts as well as develop new skills. During my time at the Canadian Academy of Dental Hygiene (CADH), I learned that as a dental hygienist that I am committed to promoting and helping each individual achieve their optimal oral health goals. In support of my client’s goals, I may assume any or all of the roles included in the dental hygiene scope of practice. My goal throughout this program was to help my clients achieve their optimal oral health goals through education, health promotion and providing preventive and clinical therapy.
At CADH, I was taught how to act upon the eight competencies in different aspects for the public. As a clinician I was taught how to apply the dental hygiene process of care; assessing signs and symptoms, as well as risks factors related to oral disease, and then make a diagnosis, plan, implement, and evaluate the treatment within the dental hygiene scope of practice. One of many important roles of being a dental hygienist is being part of a dental care team where I we work in collaboration with a dentist or a dental specialist. I have been able to extensively develop my management skills to understand the administrative setting of the school, as well as the authority responsibilities and roles of my faculty and other professionals involved. As an administrator, I am responsible to manage my clients’ periodontal status, by identifying presence of disease, setting care priorities, eliminating risk factors, and deciding whether the client is already in the maintenance state or needs further special treatment. ...inical therapy that I have learned throughout the program. As a dental hygiene student I’m already implementing ethical, legal and regulatory concepts for the provision of dental hygiene process of care, and I will utilize this foundation to throughout my career as a professional oral health care provider. In addition, as dental hygienist I will pursue life-long learning to provide client care based decisions using the most current evidence-based research. Thus I pledge to continue to learn and expand my skills and knowledge throughout my career. Graduating from CADH has provided me with great academic knowledge and clinical skills necessary to apply the concepts of health promotion and disease prevention. The experience that I have acquired at CADH will allow me to provide client specific, empathetic, empathetic and suitable treatment to all of my future clients.
I enjoyed reviewing the seven professional roles of dental hygienist, and rediscovered the how we can fulfill the administrator’s role. I expanded my vocabulary with the word of “paradigm” since it was unfamiliar with the meaning of this word. In addition, as I was reading about the conceptual models, I was comparing them to what I am doing at the dental office. I realized how much more I could be doing to maximize my potentials. Furthermore, learning about professional dental hygiene organizations was beneficial because I wasn’t clear about what each one is stand
Professionalism in the dental profession refers to our responsibilities and obligations that exists throughout our entire dental career. “Professional competence is the habitual and judicious use of communication, knowledge, technical skills, clinical reasoning, emotions, values and reflection in daily practice for the benefit of the individual and community being served (Kirk, 2007).” A health professional must be able to regulate their own behavior and comply with a code of ethics in professional practice. Fundamental principles of professionalism include primacy of patient welfare, social justice and patient autonomy (Kirk, 2007).
Out of all the careers in the world, a dental hygienist probably has one of the most interesting and flexible jobs. Not only is this career interesting and flexible, but it is also very helpful towards others and usually pays pretty well too. Many people become dental hygienists because of the easy education requirements and high demand for their jobs. These days, dental hygienists are more respected and being hired more rapidly due to the fact that more and more people are keeping and taking better care of their teeth. They also say that at the end of the day they feel accomplished in knowing that they helped improved their patient’s health, even if only in the slightest way (“Interview with a Professional”).
To be honest my initial inspiration to take the dental therapy and hygienist course was from my mother, who would say ‘If more people had healthy teeth, more people would smile’.For me this statement was a turning point ,as it lead me to wondering that maybe the lack of clean and healthy teeth , is actually the prime reason to why many of us today do not smile enough , causing less unity between the people in our society. Hence from my research into the dental world, I settled on this course as it gives an opportunity for me to not only learn how to provide an assistance to the dentists trying to spread clean teeth ,but also get a chance to help and encourage younger, elder and those with disabilities to carry out the dental treatments, so
When envisaging a future career, we generally tend to base our ideas off of the most known careers such as doctors, chefs, police officers and fireman, without the knowledge of the other possible career opportunities. After doing weeks of extensive research, I found a very feasible and riveting future career, a Dental Hygienist. Dental Hygiene is a preventive oral health profession that helps people maintain better dental health for the future. Though this career seems quite easy, it’s a crucial job that adults and children of all ages need.
When faced with the problem of poor dental hygiene, the toothbrush is man’s best friend. After a long day of munching chips, slurping soda, and chomping sweets, teeth become dirty and stained. The only way to solve the problem of filthy teeth is a toothbrush and toothpaste. Contrary to popular belief, tooth brushing is a complex process will many meticulous steps. Although it is a complex process, brushing teeth is needed to achieve dental hygiene. The main steps include entering the bathroom, preparing the toothbrush, brushing the teeth, and cleaning the sink.
As a dental hygiene student, I am bound by ethics, morality, and professional code of conduct, so it is my responsibility towards my client to behave and communicate in the most professional way to help them achieve success towards their oral health. If there is one key to helping clients to satisfaction with their oral health, it is communication. A good relationship with patients will help the dental hygienist to utilize and enhance client’s beliefs in themselves and support the client’s sense of responsibility for their own
Our team has been practicing together for 7 years now, we always strive to provide the best services and continue to keep up with the newest information available. Seeing the patients smile after administering dental treatment is one of the most gratifying experiences, and has always motivated me to evolve as a person while serving the community. In 13 years of private practice in India, I have developed empathy towards patients by being compassionate in healing their pain and understanding the needs of the community. My professional experience has enhanced my clinical knowledge, understand my strengths and weaknesses, and developing a passion for higher studies in order to offer best possible treatment to my patients. Earning a DDS/DMD degree from an accredited dental school will help fulfill my aspiration of advanced education and serve as a stepping stone in achieving personal as well as professional satisfaction.
Dentistry depends on communication skills, patience, and tolerance of individuals' differences which I think are my strong points. I believe I can give effective and equal care to all patients. Tutoring in Clarkson's Writing Lab taught me that the success of the conference depends on the ability of the tutor not to dominate but to encourage the writer to give information. This relationship parallels the doctor-patient relationship. I think dentistry is a joint effort between the doctor and patient. This field is appropriate for me because I would enjoy using the skills I've acquired t...
At the end of the day, the successful management of a denturism clinic is largely about human relationships. How can your knowledge and expertise help a patient live a better life?
The health and science fields of work have always been a special passion of mine. I have always had the desire to help those in need. The hardest part for me was deciding which career would best suit my needs in life. I have grown incredibly interested in dental hygiene for countless reasons, the first being that I am very fond of teeth. Many people glimpse at a person and notice their eyes or grin, but me, I notice their teeth. Proper oral hygiene is very important in all stages of life, which is why I want to help the community by providing them with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide optimal oral health to themselves. Another reason I am interested in dental hygiene is because there are numerous people who are afraid of dentists,
Throughout my years in university, I never came to the point where I found another career that brought as much joy and satisfaction as dentistry did. In order to accomplish my goal into becoming a successful dentist, specifically one who specializes in pediatrics, I intend to use my knowledge and skill to inspire others of the wonders of dentistry. Besides establishing dental clinics in areas that are highly populated with low-income families, I intend to also incorporate dental programs and events in K-12 schools. I believe this will inspire children to not only take better care of their teeth, but to realize that that dental offices are not areas that should be feared. As a future dentist, I want to to continue to eradicate this stereotype towards the dental world and ultimately, bring more awareness towards the significant impact it makes in lives on a regular
I decided to pursue my MPH degree to be followed with the Residency in Dental Public Health. Now, more than ever there is a need for public control and prevention of disease with healthcare costs spiraling out of control.
I witnessed an array of procedures from fillings to complex extractions. During my time I came across a patient who was afraid of the dentist and the instruments used which resulted in missing multiple appointments leading to the patient developing gum disease. They decided to go see the dentist and after the consultation they felt comfortable and reassured after seeing the work of the dentist. Looking at the situation I learnt that the dentist job wasn’t just to treat the patient but it was to interact and use people skills to listen and deal with the problem sympathetically and advice the patient of the best solution using their expertise. The experience was insightful as I gained valuable knowledge of the situations dentist faced and how the surgery was run on a daily basis which furthered my passion to study
