Nursing is not only a career, but a way to give back to the community by enhancing and maintaining the health of other individuals. Throughout my clinical experiences last year, I witnessed kindness and selflessness among many nurses that have impacted and helped shape my future career choices and life immensely. Throughout this semester, I will assess myself on my nursing skills and will constantly try to strengthen my assessments, communication, clinical judgment and patient safety skills using the Creighton Competency Evaluation Instrument (CCEI, 2014). Throughout this course, I would like to focus on perfecting my assessment finding skills along with understanding and connecting my irregular assessments to their underlying anatomy and physiology. I believe this will help me better prioritize my clinical decisions and will impact the interventions that I choose to implement for my patients. I will accomplish this goal by coming to clinicals prepared, having a basic plan ready for the day, and by reviewing interventions and medications I may need to know that pertain to the patient I am treating. I will then apply theoretical learning to patient care situations through the use of critical thinking and by completing a more focused assessment pertaining to the irregular findings that the patient is presenting. Senior nursing students will complete a QSEN weekly clinical journal requirement learn how to self-assess their progress toward demonstrating these nationally-based competencies. The students will select a different competency each week to address and discuss how they applied that competency to patient care or how they hope to better achieve that competency as a graduate nurse. By the end of the clinical rotation each student will have had a chance to focus on each of the six QSEN competencies: patient centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety and informatics. Nursing involves the ability to gather data from any given situation and process it in a manner that may benefit the patient, potentially resulting in positive outcomes for all involved. To provide effective culturally competent care, a nurse must be able to approach any given situation with an open mind, willing to set aside personal bias and prejudice. Knowing where one stands is the first step in understanding where one may improve.

Developing confidence, and competence is a challenge faced by novice nurses (Morrell & Ridgway, 2014). Over the course of my nursing degree developing, and maintaining confidence in my clinical practice has always been a personal challenge. During my preceptorship placement, I have the opportunity to continue to cultivate my confidence, and prepare to begin my practice as an independent graduate nurse. In the reflection, I will discuss how I have gradually become a confident practitioner through my experiences in my clinical placement, and especially those in my preceptorship placement.

Reflective practice is a process of thinking and critically analysing one’s experience to improve professional practice. Reflection on nursing situations not only promote the nurse’s professional development but also improve the quality of nursing care to patients (Gustafsson & Fagerberg 2004). According to Dolphin (2013), reflection process consists of systematic appraisal of events and examination of its each component to learn from the experience to influence the future practice. Though there are many models available to structure the reflection, I have chosen Gibbs model (1988) as it follows specific steps in a systematic way in reflection process. And also, this model emphasises the role of emotions and acknowledges the importance of emotions in the reflection process. For the outcome, Clinical Competence I have learned the importance of the nursing process in my current class, Skills and Concepts. This information is relatively new to me, so I know I have plenty of room to grow in this area. I have learned how to utilize the resources that I am provided. One resource in particular is my pocket guide. This has been a useful tool in helping learn and write a nursing diagnosis based upon a given situation. As I progress through the rest of this class; I hope by the end to be more competent in ways of providing the best possible care while utilizing the nursing process.
These next two years are all about preparation. My education as a nursing student is not simply about knowledge and skill, but also about growth within my attitude and professionalism. If I have all the nursing knowledge and skill in the world, but have a poor attitude and reflect poor professional values, then I truly cannot be a great nurse. That is why these professionalism concepts are such a vital aspect of my education as a nursing student, because without them, I cannot be a great nurse. A great nurse is one who has high knowledge and skill levels, but also utilizes professionalism in his or her interactions with patients, patient’s families, and other healthcare providers. A great nurse is someone who treats all patients with honor, dignity, and respect; exhibiting the professional values in all that they do. As I reflect on my own path and progress within my own professionalism, I notice that my professional communication skills need sharpening. For nurses to be able to empathize with their patients and treat them with compassion, they have to be self aware.
