Enslaved by Social Media In today’s society, we are surrounded by the use of technology, mobile phones, computers, and tablets that easily lead us to going online to surf the web. In addition to the use of technology everywhere, social media has also become one of our best friends. Although social media is known to have helped us connect and communicate with almost everyone we want, the effects of it is certainly building up as social media addiction has become a common thing among many of us here in the 21st century. In “Break Free From Social Media Addiction” by Julia Edelstein, she gives a few suggestions to how a person can reduce their risk of social media addiction. Her article includes eight ways someone can reduce their use of online networking and get what they need to be finished, done. Some rules she implicated consists of the following. The first rule she implied was to know what you’re getting yourself into. Edelstein stated in her article about what “Levi Felix the CEO of Digital Detox, a tech-free wellness retreat in Northern California” had said, “Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter--They’ve all been designed to make you repeatedly use them and check back in”. So, If you know what you’re getting yourself into, you can stop yourself from getting too attached to it. Another suggestion she purposed was to “Respond Offline”. Responding offline is a way to help us stay away from social media use and have real life interactions that will not isolate us from the real world. In addition to knowing what you 're getting yourself into and responding offline, Edelstein also mentions how you can “Alter Your Settings” to get what you need done, done. To do this, all you need to do is turn off alerts and get rid of addicting apps like Facebook on your phone for the time being. Like mentioned above, about why we become addicted to social media, “Dopamine” triggers us to want to know more. Therefore, when we get an alert from facebook it will trigger our brain to naturally check the notification. By changing the settings, we can ignore the notification and finally get what we needed to be done,
