Peer Counseling The Impact of Peer Counseling on my Life Moving Forward Helping people, whether it is through difficult times or to just achieve a goal, is one of the most rewarding of human experiences. However, with it being so rewarding, there is significant difficulty behind successfully helping someone. Luckily there are people that specialize in helping such as peer counsellors. Although helping does come naturally for some, certain things can be learnt to make one a better helper. In this class various lessons were learnt when it came to helping people. The first lesson that encompasses a very broad spectrum is “The 8 Commandments” as the book Peer Counseling by V. D’Andrea and P. Salovey calls them. I consider this the core lessons that I learnt in this class as each commandment taught me a great deal. The first commandment, be nonjudgmental, may seem obvious by is very hard to execute. When exposed to a situation out of the ordinary of your life, it is often natural as human beings to think about the strangeness or oddness of the person you are helping. With that said one needs to examine one own attitudes about the problem at hand and make himself or herself aware of personal biases that may affect your ability to be objective. Also, peer counseling has taught me a little bit of the discipline and thus it will allow me to help my family and friends and anyone else who comes to me for help. All in all, this class has taught me so much in so little time, that I can only imagine what one can learn if one goes deeper in the discipline of counseling.
