“Oh I think that I found myself a cheerleader.” This song lyric by OMI, certainly makes a statement about women; but what really is the meaning behind this lyric? Our country has become one that is obsessed with perfection, and controlled ideals; especially in regards to women. This song may have been written with good intentions, or no ulterior motive, but that is not the only way that is being perceived. The song is degrading, and sexist because of its concept of the perfect women, her objectification, and the blatant use of degrading stereotypes. Let’s explore the ideal woman. Who is she? Women in our society have never truly been equal. Men have always diminished their importance, and equality; and while many leaps and bounds have been made to change this, unfortunately our society is one that is still male dominated. Women are not treated equally with pay, within some households, or even within politics. We no longer subscribe to the outdated notion of the 1950’s housewife, but even women who work, are still expected to be able to do everything within the home as well. Women are leading fortune five hundred companies, they are changing world politics, and they are leading nations, but there is still a lingering notion that a women needs a man to be successful. Men often view their girlfriend as a trophy; as something that they have conquered, and are not willing to share with anyone else. OMI sings: “She grants my wishes like a genie in a bottle”, and “She is always right there when I need her”. A woman as a genie is the most deplorable display of objectification. You are comparing a women to a slave, who must follow your every command, in order to give you what you want. She must be at your beck and call, and always there. This is horrifying that in this advanced social time, this song would blatantly put a women in a bottle, for a man’s use.
