Service is defined as the action of helping or doing work for someone/ something (Definition of Service in English). Service can be done on a personal basis, by going out into the community and helping the immediate people. Service can also be achieved through amazing service organizations who spend each and every day with one goal in mind: to help those who are in need. Many service organizations reach this action and exceed it in all directions, however one specific organization that is exemplary and very much valuable to our society is the Siena Francis House. The Siena Francis house is Nebraska’s largest shelter, provides for the homeless in many ways, and has an “open door” policy.
The Siena Francis House was founded in 1975 (Siena/Francis House Homeless Shelter). Fr Jack McCaslin is my great uncle and he was involved in the making of the Siena Francis House in the very beginning. People came knocking at his door because they knew about his connections with the community, and that he could make a big difference in the making of the Siena Francis House. “The mission of the Siena/Francis House is directed toward a concern and care of the poor. This mission is realized in feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, and clothing the needy. This mission extends beyond merely answering physical needs to the acceptance and affirmation of the human person, the creation of an atmosphere of hospitality, and the provision of purpose and meaning in the lives of people who struggle for survival. It is also the mission of the Siena/Francis House to call the greater Omaha community to a social consciousness and to enlist help and support in the care of the homeless and the indigent” (Siena/Francis House Homeless Shelter).

Since people who go to the Siena/Francis house are most likely out of work, they provide a program that helps men and women get real world work experience. They can train in the kitchen and do meal preparations, work in the front desk, do maintenance, help on the loading dock, and work in the Day Services Center. Not only do they provide this program but they also have an education program to break the cycle of homelessness.
The Siena Francis House portrays service everyday to every person that walks through their doors, wether it be a mother, child, man or veteran. Anyone in need is welcome there. The provide these people with a place to sleep, food, clothes and a plan for the future. This service organization is very valuable for our society and deserves to be recognized for the work that they do.
