There are many accurate definitions of the term Operations Management. However, my understanding is that operations management is about getting things done. An organisations priority is to make a profit and to do so they must operate effectively and efficiently. They must make customers their priority and everything that the operation does should be in the interest of the customer. In recent times almost everything is becoming “quicker, better cheaper…. together” (Keegan and O’Kelly, 2015). By asking important questions an organisation can constantly improve their operations. There are five simple yet effective questions which allow an organisation to capture the facts of a situation and make things better. ‘What are you doing?’, ‘How are you doing it?’, and ‘Why are you doing it?’ are all factual based questions which require an informative answer about the organisation, its processes and values. The answers can shine light on problems and confusion within the organisation. The questions ‘Who is going to improve it?’ and ‘When?’ are aimed at fixing these problems. I work for a small organisation which specialises in three areas; machinery, fuel, and animal feed. It is a family owned business and it is very clear from day to day operations that these questions are not being asked. The main reason I see for the lack of management in this organisation is that because of the three different departments everyone is looking out for their own department and not asking these questions about the company as one. It makes certain tasks difficult for the workers as we don’t know who to answer

Imagine the reaction of a couple who received a chilling prophecy from an oracle who declared that their infant was destined to kill his father and marry his mother. Modern society would be aghast at this disgusting choice, but unfortunately Oedipus’s parents abandoned him, where he was saved by the mercy of others. Fate was against Oedipus, and he inadvertently created a domino effect of tragic choices that would make his parent’s prophecy a reality. Oedipus fled Corinth leading him to kill a disrespectful stranger. He solved the Sphinx’s riddle which gave him kingship and the queen of Thebes. Oedipus went from death row to royalty temporarily, but he would discover a truth that would ruin his life. This idea of fate was conflicted with the Oedipus complex as believed by film producer Pasolini and author Freud who believed that Oedipus’s actions were a result of a sexual bond with his mother. They believed that this sexual bond was the underlying factor that led Oedipus to kill his father Laius and marry his mother Jocasta. To affirm their beliefs, Pasolini changed several scenes from the original play in his film Oedipus Rex, and intertwined the scenes with multiple Freudian theories to construct that Oedipus desired Oedipus complex. However, if Oedipus really wanted to marry his mother and murder his father, then why would he flee Thebes? Why would he blind himself if he received what he desired? Operations refers to the transformation of raw materials(inputs) into finished products(outputs). The operations process is one of the key business functions and is a crucial component to business success. Like every business, Qantas is affected by many internal and external influences requiring it to have effective strategies to respond to these influences. Businesses that are able to adopt and utilise effective operational strategies are able to quickly adapt and either reduce or take advantage of these influences that impact the business. The effectiveness of these strategies can measured by Qantas’ performance and whether or not it is able to hold it’s competitive advantage. How well these strategies respond to the influences on operations will determine the level of success that Qantas achieves.

The company has just recently started to recover from a large layoff in 1975, which reduced worker job confidence. The Houghton family has a preference for an informal workplace with an ambiguous leadership style that contradicts the formal and strict resource allocation system designed for their international strategy. The current strategy being employed differs with the owner’s philosophy, which is important, since the President must buy into the plan to understand and communicate it effectively. This miscommunication creates goal incongruence, which is exemplified by the confusion of corporate divisions about whether they should be focusing on reducing cost or being an innovator. Also, each officer has been described as having work that overlaps, showing no focus and a lack of efficiency. The fact that each of the over 150 businesses groups have to write up a resource allocation request and business strategy creates the issue of finding time to read each report.
Successfully running a business or organization requires mastering the four primary functions of managing. The four functions of management are planning, organization, leading and controlling.
