The Holocaust began January 30, 1933, and concluded May 8, 1945. During the Holocaust eleven million people were killed under the rule of Adolf Hitler. Out of these eleven million people, six million Jewish people, and one million children had lost their lives. Hearts were being broken one after another, because of Hitler, the heinous ruler who advocated the punishment of death for anyone who differentiated from a German or Christian. It was essential to do whatever was possible to save a child’s life. Hiding a child during this brutal time was another step forward to fighting for what was right.
Rahel Renate Mann is proud to say she is a Holocaust survivor. She is now 75 years old and still remains in Berlin, where she was once hidden from the Nazis. Thrown out of the hospital as a newborn on June 1937, she continued to grow up with the weight of the holocaust horrors on her shoulders. In 1941, her mother was abducted, and the Vater family hid Rahel. Eventually she was overstaying her welcome, and the Vater family couldn’t handle the pressure anymore. She was sent underground and met Ettel Friedrich Von Rebenau who kept the Jewish faith alive. They sang together until he was taken when she turned seven, and she was sent back to the Vater family. There she remained until she was reunited with her deathly ill mother.
Similarly to Rahel, many times children had to separate from their parents. The emotional effects were consistent. Often, children quietly suffered because it was too dangerous to move or talk. In other cases, children may have been able to live openly rather than in attics or cellars. This was only if they didn’t look Jewish. ...s. In France a rescue group called, Œuvre de Secours aux Enfants, (Organization to Save the Children) was able to smuggle children out of internment camps.
In comparison to rescue groups, there were also individual rescuers. There were a handful of individuals who were able to do this and stand up for what they believed was right. Malka Fugtazki, from Lithuania, rescued children from the Kovno ghetto. She did this by feeding them sleeping pills, and tying the child to her body. With the help of a Jewish guard, she was able to bring them to safety at a Lithuanian orphanage. The Nazis forced these Ghettos by threatening the people. They threatened to shoot hostages unless a judenräte, Jewish council, was formed. These councils were in control of the Ghettos. Once you were put in a ghetto you had to remain there, and leaving without a guard was punishable by death.
Ruth Posner is one of the many few holocaust survivors and a great dancer, choreographer and actress. Ruth was born on April 20, 1933, in Warsaw. She was raised in a Jewish family with her parents, but went to a Catholic school. At home, she spoke Polish. Ruth suddenly started hearing offensive comments by some of her close Polish Catholic friends. They said things like “you killed Christ.” It was an incredible shock.” That was just the beginning. By the time she was just 12, and the Second World War was underway, Ruth had lost both her parents and her world as she knew it. She was in the middle of the Holocaust.
Many groups had great power and influence around the world during the Holocaust. How this influence was used or not used helped shape experiences, often horrific, for many European Jews. In Hungary, toward the end of the Holocaust not only did the international institutions become silent bystanders, but their very own neighbors turned their back on their fellow citizens knowing what atrocities awaited their arrival at Auschwitz. The brutality started close to home when fellow Hungarians, in a combined effort with the city government, railroad officials, and law-enforcement agencies coordinated a swift transport of 400,000 Jews to their almost certain death. “In March 1944, the Germans occupied Hungary and in April, they forced the Jews into ghettos.
Another method of dehumanizing the Jews was to make sure they turned on one another. Once the Jews began turning on each other, it kept them in their place and allowed them to mistrust one another even though the Germans were the real culprits. Since goods were scarce, it did not take long for the ghettos to descend into chaos. Stealing became a common practice amongst those who could not afford to buy illegally on the black market. Another way to make sure Jews constantly mistrusted one another was to make sure Jews were the ones who kept the ghettos running. Within the ghettos, a Jewish police force called Jüdischer Ordnungsdienst was created to keep Jews from escaping the ghettos. They wore armbands with an identifying marker and a badge. They were not permitted to use guns but were allowed to carry batons. The Jewish police reported any mishaps to the German police who were assigned to check perimeters outside the ghettos. They were recruited from two groups: lawyers and criminals. The criminal group was larger and soon became the dominating force behind the police and life inside the ghettos. In the Warsaw ghetto, a special group called Group 13 was created for the purpose of combatting the black market that thrived during this time. The group was also known as the Jewish Gestapo and had orders to report back to the German Gestapo. While officially the group’s job was to fight off the black market, unofficially the group extorted and blackmailed Polish sympathizers. They also were very skilled in tracking down Jews who had managed to not be sent to the ghettos. The Jewish Police were also in charge of a prison that allowed them to continue their illegal operations
The Holocaust was a very impressionable period of time. It not only got media attention during that time, but movies, books, websites, and other forms of media still remember the Holocaust. In Richard Brietman’s article, “Lasting Effects of the Holocaust,” he reviews two books and one movie that were created to reflect the Holocaust (BREITMAN 11). He notes that the two books are very realistic and give historical facts and references to display the evils that were happening in concentration camps during the Holocaust. This shows that the atrocities that were committed during the Holocaust have not been forgotten. Through historical writings and records, the harshness and evil that created the Holocaust will live through centuries, so that it may not be repeated again (BREITMAN 14).
The Holocaust started in 1939. In that time period the Germans and the Allied Forces were in war. When they were in war the Germans took all Jews (except the ones in hiding) to multiple concentration camps and death camps. When they were sent to concentration camps they were ordered to take off all their jewelry, gold teeth and clothes. They were provided with stripped pajamas with numbers on them so they can be recognized by their number and not by their names. For example, a family of 8 escaped to a cave in Ukraine around October 1942 (Arkell). This family, the Stermers, hid in a cave with five other Jewish families, 38 total people (Arkell). The mother, Esther, the father, Zaida, two of the brothers, Sam and Saul, and two more waited for 18 months in this cramped space (Arkell). They probably didn’t have to be quiet since they were in a cave away from civilization, but I wonder if they were scared of people roaming around. An SS officer came and invaded the cave, but after they had a little talk with Esther, they left and never came back (Arkell). She said, "What are you afraid of here? The Fuhrer is gonna lose the war because we live here? “(Arkell). At the end of the hard year and a half, the Russians liberated their Ukrainian town and they were saved (Arkell). There is a movie that came out that explains all the hardships that they suffered (Arkell).
Those of half and quarter Jewish descent remain largely forgotten in the history of the Third Reich and genocide of the Holocaust. Known as Mischlinge, persons of deemed “mixed blood” or “hybrid” status faced extensive persecution and alienation within German society and found themselves in the crosshairs of a rampant National Socialist racial ideology. Controversially, these people proved somewhat difficult to define under Nazi law that sought to cleave the Volk from the primarily Jewish “other”, and as the mechanization toward Hitler’s “Final Solution” the Mischlinge faced probable annihilation. The somewhat neglected status of Mischlinge necessitates a refocusing on German racialization as well as reconsideration of the implications wrought by the alienation and ultimate persecution of the thousands of half and quarter Jews subjugated in Nazi Germany.

The term holocaust can be translated into Hebrew and it means devastation or ruin. The Holocaust was a mass murder of about six million Jews during World War II, a systematic state sponsored murder for Adolf Hitler and the rest of the Nazis and they invaded German-occupied territories. Out of all nine million of the Jews who chose to live in Europe, about two-thirds were killed in the Holocaust. One million children, two million women and three million men were killed that were Jewish. There was a network of over 40,000 facilities in Germany and Germany-occupied territories were used to hold and kill Jews and other victims. Some scholars today argue that the murder of disabled people and the Romani should be included, and some use the common noun ‘holocaust’ to describe other Nazi murders including Soviet prisoner of war. The persecution and genocide were carried out in stages, like making laws. Various laws, like the Nuremberg Laws of 1935, were to exclude Jews from the civil society and enacted in Germany before the outbreak of World War II in Europe. Concentration camps were established in which inmates would work in slave labor until they died of exhaustion or disease. The Holocaust was the murder and persecution of approximately 6 million Jews and many others by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. The Nazis came to power in Germany in January of 1933. The Nazis thought that the “inferior” Jews were a threat to the “racially superior” German racial community. The death camps were operated from 1941 to 1945, and many people lost their lives or were forced to work in concentration camps during these years. The story leading up to the Holocaust, how the terrible event affected people’s lives, and how it came to and end are all topics that make this historic event worth learning about.
There were two types of hidden children: the children that didn’t look like the stereotypical Jew, and were hidden in plain sight, in an orphanage or maybe with a family who pretended the child was an orphaned family member. Then there were the ones that were truly hidden, such as in an abandoned building, a hidden room, or- as Lola was- in a hole dug beneath a cellar in a farmhouse on the edge of town. Either way, the children had to stay silent. While Lola Rein writes of her time in hiding she says, “But what kind of life is this? Children are supposed to be noisy, not silent…they are supposed to be part of the world, not live like they don’t exist” (Rein Kaufne). Lola also tells of how, during her year of hiding, she hardly spoke.
The Holocaust was the genocide of approximately six million people of innocent Jewish decent by the Nazi government. The Holocaust was a very tragic time in history due to the idealism that people were taken from their surroundings, persecuted and murdered due to the belief that German Nazi’s were superior to Jews. During the Holocaust, many people suffered both physically and mentally. Tragic events in people’s lives cause a change in their outlook on the world and their future. Due to the tragic events that had taken place being deceased in their lives, survivors often felt that death was a better option than freedom.
The Holocaust is a subject familiar to most people around the world. They either learned about it in school or on TV. The word “Holocaust” comes from the Greek words “holos” and “kaustos. “Holos” which means whole and the word “kaustos” meaning burned. Originally it is historically used to describe a sacrificial offering burned on an altar. Throughout history the word has taken a whole different meaning. I missed out on my childhood and the best of my adolescent years. I was robbed of my name, my religion, and my Zionist idealism” (“Hidden Children”). Jewish children went through a lot throughout the Holocaust- physically, mentally, and emotionally. Life was frightening and difficult for children who were in hiding during the rule of Adolf Hitler.
