Technology, specifically recreational technology such as gaming, smartphones, virtual reality, and by extension social media, has made communication at a distance easier while making private or interpersonal communication more awkward. The development of gaming technology has increased so rapidly that experiences within the game itself seem realistic. The characters within these games are becoming more realistic visually and in the way how they are programmed to portray emotions. This causes people to often substitute the gaming experience for real world interaction and in some cases prefer the gaming experience to real world interaction. In fact, it has become so convenient that there is almost no need to meet in person if everything can be done online. For instance, instead of having to meet each other for group work in school, it is much easier and convenient to make a group chat, meet online, and do the work that way. It is quick, fairly simple and does not take too much energy to accomplish. That is why people prefer online communication because it is not as much of a hassle compared to actually meet up with a person to discuss an idea or, in terms of gaming, hang out with one another. Teamwork and social skills are the cornerstone of functioning effectively in a business driven environment because businesses require networking and interpersonal communication skills with another individual. At times, meeting face to face is not applicable so online means of communication must be used. However, we, as human beings, are susceptible to misinterpreting information if all the details are not clearly explained. Misinterpreting information can lead to a decrease in overall productivity. As Chuck Martin declares in his article “The Importance of Face-to-Face Communication at Work”, “A global survey shows that 67 percent of senior executives and managers say their organization would be more productive if their superiors communicated more often by personal discussion. While they desire more personal discussion from their superiors, however, the top personal method of communicating for these same business leaders is e-mail, based on the survey by NFI Research.” The survey shows that even senior executives value personal communication as it can shed light on confusing scenarios and difficult obstacles.
