In the field of social work, social work practitioners encourage clients to take part in self-care activities as self-care is one factor that promotes subjective well-being (cite). For example, self-care activities a social worker may recommend to their clients are eating healthy, exercising, practicing mindfulness and getting enough quality sleep. Self-care is one variable indicative to subjective well-being as self-care supports an individual’s physical and mental health. In this paper I am focusing on a particular self-care activity, improving sleep hygiene practices, and how not getting enough quality sleep may affect subjective well-being.

Social workers can use a single-subject design with a client to evaluate whether or not a certain intervention is achieving the desired outcome. The first step when utilizing a single subject design in clinical practice is to obtain the client’s baseline. A baseline is a control phase or the measurement of the client’s mental status or behavior before the intervention (cite textbook). One common single-subject design model is the ABA. This model includes one baseline phase (A), one intervention phase (B) and another baseline phase (B). The ABA SSD took place over three consecutive weeks that began with a seven day baseline period, then a seven day intervention period during which I would employ a therapeutic intervention, and lastly a seven day follow-up period. On the seventh day of the first week, after Elins and I discussed the area of self-care that he wanted to improve he completed a PANAS. The following week Elins implemented the self-care intervention which consisted of no TV/electronics on while in the bedroom and the last week he went back to his regular sleep routine. See Appendix A for complete tracking of these three periods. In addition to the two measures, Elins completed a written follow-up survey. See Appendix B for a sample of the follow-up
