Being a parent is a full time job that by no means is easy. It takes a lot to raise a child. Usually there are many sacrifices the parent makes so their child has a better life and parents try to raise them in the best manner possible. In two different novels The Family of Pascual Duarte by Camilo Cela and The House of Bernarda Alba by Frederico Lorca, readers are introduced to two mothers who are anything but great parents. However, Bernarda is a better mother than Pascual’s mother because she was only doing what she thought was best for her daughter’s whereas Pascual’s mother didn’t always act in the best interest of her children. In The House of Bernarda Alba readers get to know Bernarda the mother of five daughters. Bernarda often comes across as a mean woman who just wishes to control her daughters, while in reality she just wants to do what she feels will best protect them. “Until I leave this house feet first, I will make the decisions—my own, and yours!” (Lorca, 223) This makes Bernarda sound like bit of a control freak, as she is basically telling her daughter Angustias that over her dead body will she fight with her sister Magdalena; however, she really is just trying to keep peace and protect them. Then in The Family of Pascual Duarte readers are introduced to Pascual’s mother, whose actions do not show that she cares much about protecting her children. “My father and mother didn’t get along at all. They had been badly brought up, were endowed with no special virtues, and could not resign themselves to their lot.” (Cela, 24) Pascual’s parents, but especially his mother, did not care enough about the safety and well-being of the child in the home to lay aside their differences or find a better way to deal with the problems at hand. In the novels, Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya and Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, there are similar conflicts between the parental figure of a main character and the main character. Both conflicts in the novels stem from the parental figure not having control and authority over their family and forcing their beliefs onto those they are raising.
The first objection to Lafollette’s argument is that “…there may not be, or we may not be able to discover, adequate criteria of ‘a good parent’” (Lafollette 1980, 190). This is a strong and sound objection because who can universally define what constitutes a good parent? Many cultures prefer to raise their children in different ways that others might think is unacceptable. Federico Garcia Lorca was born in 1898 and died in 1936, he lived through one of the most troubling times of Spain's history. He grew up in Granada, Spain, and enjoyed the lifestyle and countryside of Spain. His father was a wealthy farmer and his mother was a school teacher and encouraged his love of literature, art, and music. He was an extremely talented man. A respectable painter, a fine pianist, and an accomplished writer. He was close friends with some of Spain's most talented people, including musician Manuel de Falla, and painter Salvador Dali. Lorca was a very liberal man who lived un dictatorship for most of his life. However, in 1931 Spain turned into more of a democracy, and was called "The Second Spanish Republic." However, fascist leader, Francisco Franco, was trying to gain control of Spain. Known as a leftist, Lorca was killed by Franco's forces. What are considered to be his three most important plays, referered to as folk tragedies were: Blood Wedding, Yerma, and the House of Bernarda Alba. They really drove home his feelings of the Spanish culture, and, in particular, its treatment of women.
The goals that mothers set for their young daughters while trying to protect them displays a thin line between protecting and overprotective. In the book Bossypants by Tina Fey, she talks about her life experience. Tina Fey devoted a whole chapter of “prayers” she has for her daughter in “The Mother’s Prayer for Its Daughter”. The prayers contain different standards, and goals that she made for her daughter. When a woman becomes a mother she must take full responsibility for the upbringing of a small human. The mother-child relationship can be a standout amongst the most convoluted, and fulfilling, of all connections. Women are fuel by self-sacrifice and guilt - but everyone is the better for it. Many women are choosing to work, which requires them to hire a caregiver for their children that sometimes can take the place of the mother. There as been a rise with the employment of nannies. Many individuals in the world view mothers that work outside the home as neglecting the duties as a mother. Hanna Rosin a writer for The Atlantic states in “Mother Inferior” she concentrates on showing how Western style parenting is not considered pathetic as Amy Chau the author of “Battle of the Tiger Mother” assumes. She indicates that the different style of parenting shows how some kids are free willed and take on life learning and making mistakes while others are stuck trying to master one thing without having a choice. A parent’s parenting styles are as diverse as the world we live in today. Nowadays, parents only want what is best for their children and their parenting styles plays a crucial role in the development of children which will in the long run, not only effect the child’s childhood years, but later prolong into their adult life as well.
No one teaches us how to be parents. As parents raise their children they hope to raise them to be good members of society. A child’s upbringing is reflected as they interact with other children and other people. When they come to act inappropriately or in a way society doesn’t see as normal, the person to blame is the parent. As a parent, today and always, they need to raise their child to meet the societal norms and at the same teach them to be good citizens. The parenting a person receives will be reflected when they form their own family. The belief is then formed to be to raise a better family than the one raised in. The different parenting styles and the factors have to be taken into consideration such as time, the environment, and the social and psychological aspects as well. The belief is to be a loving and tolerating parent but there is no perfect way to parent because each child has their own needs.
Parent/Child relationships are very hard to establish among individuals. This particular relationship is very important for the child from birth because it helps the child to be able to understand moral and values of life that should be taught by the parent(s). In the short story “Teenage Wasteland”, Daisy (mother) fails to provide the proper love and care that should be given to her children. Daisy is an unfit parent that allows herself to manipulated by lacking self confidence, communication, and patience.
Webster’s dictionary defines parenting as the process of raising and education a child from birth until adulthood. Everyone has or had a caregiver, whether it be pests, animals or human beings. However, the thing that differs is the method of parenting. There are many methods of parenting, but there are only three main parts. They include authoritarian parenting style, permissive parenting style, and democratic parenting style. The next few paragraphs will give the reader a detailed description of these three parenting methods and what my parents have used in parenting me.
Successful parenting may be judged by many different standards. Raising a child to be a respectful, mature, and independent adult requires a great deal of effort. There are several parenting styles, and not all lead a child to reaching their full potential. Overpowering sternness leads may lead to a rebellious child, while passive parenting may lead children to inept for the challenges of adulthood. Parenting requires more than teaching children submissiveness, or building of self-importance. Children learn best from a role model who is admirable. Parenting is a great opportunity to set the course of one’s entire life in the right direction.
Poncia, later in the play, even tries to help Bernarda realize what has been going on in her own house (253-256). Even when there was a lot of gossip on Bernarda's house that could have been spread through the town Poncia keeps it from spreading; as she told Bernarda; "I cover up more than you think" (275). Poncia is clearly the protagonist in this story, although she tries to pick sides. Looking into the lives of these characters, the obvious is this: the daughters are against the mother, and Poncia often fits in the middle.
Good parenting is key for the development of young children for the way they act, make decisions, lifestyles and how they perceive others. So, when it comes down to choosing the right parenting style, it can be a bit challenging for many new and old parents. There are currently four popular parenting styles that consist of authoritarian, neglectful, permissive and authoritative. Although there are only four main parenting styles, parents can still be non-decisive and have a mixture of the parenting styles. Within this work I will be explaining the four different parenting styles and the effects they have on children. As well as explain how my parents raised me and the changes I will make when raising my children.
