Ethics have been a part of life since we were born. We are taught at a young age to not steal, and that it is bad; to always hold that door open for older people, and to just be whole heartily kind. Also we have to think ethically every decision we have to make and to take everything in a part of what you decide, even keeping you in interest. It is important to consider a situation or context in which moral problems occur. Also it is important to establish moral principles, rules and guidelines. Another is about how businesses apply ethics to make them well rounded, which is important for anyone in business or going into business. The last important thing is why we have the central problems of morality to attain agreement on a moral system without denying individual 's freedom. Ethics are a set of rules that define suitable behavior in humanity. They serve as a guide to standards in day-to-day living and help people judge whether their behavior can be reasonable. “With morals serving as the underpinning of society, there are 4 points people should remember,” according to Robert C Solomon. (The Importance) One being, moral rules are important because in the over-all world, moral rules are rules that help people in a society work in a civilized way. The second being “morality consists of universal rules,” and that the rules “apply to everyone, everywhere, and are recognized by everyone as being necessary.” (The Importance) The third one is moral are the objectives, and that they don’t consider individual preferences. “Right is right and wrong is wrong/” (The Importance) Lastly, the fourth on according to Robert C Solomon is that morality affects other people. Ethics also refers to the specific values, standards, rules, and agreements people adopt for conducting their lives. That’s why ethics is essential to social workers.
Ethics is the study of morality. Morality is composed of the standards that an individual or group has about what is right or wrong and good or bad. Through ethics, you are able to reflect on one’s moral standards or moral stands of a group or society and asking whether they are reasonable. One must keep in mind ethical relativism when analyzing whether a situation is right or wrong. Ethical relativism says that moral right and wrong depend on the culture a person belongs to. Since societies differ in the moral standards there is no single correct set of moral standards everyone should follow. The three main schools of thought learned for ethics are utilitarianism, Kantian ethics, and ethics of care. Using these three schools of thoughts I will analyze an episode of Catfish.

Every individual has certain rules and guidelines by which they base their decisions off of. There are certain rules that determine people’s actions and these rules may differ from one individual or group to another. These rules are the principles that direct an individual’s actions and are collectively known as ethics. Ethics is important because it helps one differentiate between what is right and wrong when making decisions. Ethics also includes the moral codes or values that a person holds, which are more personal than the codes of ethics. In the role of morality I identify myself most with the philosopher Immanuel Kant because of the similarities shared between our philosophies.

There are many ethical theories, and according to Panza and Potthast (n.d.) the following are some that are widely used. Virtue ethics is one theory which states that personality is the most important thing. Living an ethical life, acting right, requires that one develops and demonstrates the quality of courage, compassion, wisdom, and temperance. It also requires that greed, jealousy, and selfishness is avoided. Utilitarianism states that the amount of happiness and suffering created by a person’s actions is what matters the most. As a result, acting rightly includes maximizing the amount of happiness and minimizing the amount of suffering around you. At times you may need to break some of the traditional moral rules to achieve such an outcome. Kantianism is another theory which highlights the principles behind actions rather than an actions results. It states that it requires to be motivated by good principles that treats everyone with respect. If you’re motivated by good principles, you overcome your animal instinct and act ethically. Another ethical theory is the Contract theory, which suggest that ethics should be thought of as terms of agreements between people. It suggests that doing the right thing means obeying agreements set by members rather than those of society. For this theory ethics isn’t necessarily about character, consequences, or principles.
