The Ob River
The issue
The Ob River is situated in North Russia and flows in a South Easterly direction 68.8333° N, 73.5000° E. It is the seventh longest river in the world. This river begins in the Altai Mountains and flows through Siberia to the Gulf of Ob. Some countries it runs through include Russia and Kazakhstan. With an area of 395,000 km2, its length is 1670 km and the annual average rainfall into the Ob River is 800 mm. The Ob River provides 12% of all water into the Arctic Ocean. This water is slightly mineralised due to the eroded matter from surrounding river banks. The Ob River is a major form of transportation in the Siberia region. Importing and exporting business occurs along the river.
I have chosen to research this lengthy river because of its diverse climatic zones. The river basin flows through a variety of landscapes including tundra, steppe, swamps and semi desert topography.
The Ob River
The river has gradually become polluted from a variety of contamination sources that flow into it. If this issue is not taken seriously the Ob River might be unsafe to use as drinking water. The issue I have chosen to investigate is pollution contaminating the Ob River and the devastating impact this has on both humans and animals.
How has this occurred?
The Ob River is made up of many smaller rivers that slowly join together and then disperse out to the Arctic Ocean. Erosion and weathering have continued to increase the immense size of this river system. Ice forms over the river from October to mid-May. Melting ice causes ice jams which further erode the river upstream.
Human elements have shaped parts of the landscape with the introduction of a dam, bridges and boats which dredge the water, changing the natural f...

I believe the Ob River is truly a beautiful river and must be protected for future generations. We must work together to increase awareness of pollution into this majestic river. I believe we must act now to prevent this vast water source from becoming undrinkable in the near future. Large companies such as those providing power in Russia are torn between their right to make money and the heavy costs involved in reducing pollution on waterways. Some companies believe it is their right to provide employment and power to the cities, regardless of the pollution they create in this process. A balance between the environment and economic wealth must be obtained if the Ob River is going to be environmentally stable into the future.
Hydrosphere of the Mississippi River A Case Study of * River management * People interfering in the hydrosphere * A flood management scheme River Basin / Catchment area The source of the river is the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains to the north. There are many hundreds of tributaries including the Red River, Missouri river and the river Ohio. The mountains form the river's watershed. From Minneapolis the river flows South-East into Iowa where it flows south as far as Davenport. At Davenport it is joined by more small tributaries.
The Russian river is a place in California where Dave and his family would usually go for a vacation. He remembers this place as a quiet and peaceful place. He remembers how he and his brothers would play, how his mother would to hug him, and how they would all watch the sunset together
Television commercials, print ads, and billboards in the Washington, DC, area are asking residents to connect two things many might find unrelated: lawn care and seafood. In one commercial, a man stuffs a big plateful of grass in his mouth after a voice-over says, “Spring rains carry excess lawn fertilizers through our sewers and rivers and into the Chesapeake Bay, where the blue crab harvest has been extremely low. So skip the fertilizer until fall, because once they’re gone, what’s left to enjoy?”(Environment, p. 7)
Humans have interacted with our planet and its glorious sights and resources in both negative and positive ways; some ways have a negative effect on our land but a positive effect on our economic progression and visa versa. Unfortunately the Cuyahoga River has been made famous because of its complications that have been caused, which has created not only economical problems but environmental problems all throughout its troubled history and is still being fixed to this day.
The question still remains; what should we the do about this problem. Well many whose lives have been affected by the industry have fought against them to change their policies. Places like the Neuse River and the Black River have volunteers that help keep them clean. Researchers like Wing and other dedicated a lot of time and effort to report these problems. The least we should is just be aware of these problems, get involved protest, being prepared to vote and most important not letting apathy towards issues, because if we if we let issues go under the radar them we’ll have so much more corruption to deal with than ever.
The boundaries of environmental and man-made life began to blend causing shift throughout the environment but also to the natural habitat. White explains with great passion how not only are people effected so are the animals, such as the salmon that once swam the river unrestricted. Another great and hugely important theme throughout this book is the history of the salmon wildlife and how man made changes have drastically effected them. The change in river flow patterns, water temperatures, and spawning areas are just a few example of how the creation of dams and man made additions affect our
Then the documentary tackles Puget Sound. The Duwamish River is the largest hot spot in the nation. In 2001, the Duwamish River was classified as a “Super Fund” site. This is given to a site that will receive federal assistance for clean up. But yet, it may be too late. Puget Sound in contaminated with PCP, lead and mercury. The threat comes from the giant industrial polluters of old and from chemicals in consumers’ face creams, deodorants, prescription medicines and household cleaners that find their way into sewers, storm drains, eventually into America’s waterways and drinking water.
that we have to start watching where we drain our polluted water, and start to
The Chesapeake Bay has faced an excessive amount of pollution over the past century. The water in the bay has become so highly polluted that It is capable of causing harm to humans coming in direct contact with the water. Although algae serves a vital role in the bay’s ecosystem, it also creates a problem that is causing a large amount of the problem.

The Great Lakes provide almost half the water for the residents of Ontario. The Great Lakes also provides water to residents in Thunder Bay, Port Hope, Sault St Marie, Niagara and many parts of The United States to name a few. With 70% of the Earth covered in water only 0.1% of it is clean accessible drinking water. The Great Lakes plays a major role in helping to provide water for people that live near the American/Canadian border. However this resource is being mistreated. Water pollution is a growing problem in the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes is being contaminated by pollutants that are released for direct and indirect sources without proper treatment. This is causing the lake to being polluted with harmful chemicals. By identifying the cause we can take initiative to help conserve the Great Lakes and to help restore it to its natural beauty.
Water pollution has had devastating effects on the environment, which include irreversible effects to the oceans ecosystem. People often underestimate the importance of the ocean. They don’t realize how much damage pollution has caused to the ocean and the thousand of creatures that inhabit it. Earth is a huge place, but resources are actually very limited and will not last forever; unless there is a balance. We must protect the resources we have in order for them to last into the next generation. Every time we throw away a plastic bottle, drive our cars, and even burn those millions of fossil fuels to operate all those huge factories, there is a chance it will pollute the ocean and eventually effect the way we live. There should be stricter laws regulating human pollution, in order to protect our oceans ecosystem.
Water Pollution is a current issue that has serious consequences; it progresses everyday in our lakes, oceans, rivers and other bodies of water.
