When discussing how one can achieve one’s American dream, many factors come into play. However, no factor is more important than education. Education often determines the likelihood of one being able to achieve one’s American dream. Higher education, in particular, is now looked at more than ever as a determining factor in increasing the chance in obtaining the American dream. A college education it is supposed to give every American equal chances to obtain their American dream. However, this claim is now disputed. Cornell University’s professor of government Suzanne Mettler argues that higher education in America is not what it once was and now has placed Americans on an unleveled playing field. Mettler contends in her New York Times article “College, The Great Unleveler” that higher education has created an unequal chance at social and economic mobility and attributes the absence of government support to be one of the main causes. Although I agree with Mettler’s points that college is hindering social mobility and that the government has failed to upkeep education policies, I disagree with her that higher education has become a caste system.
“College, The Great Unleveler”, is Suzanne Mettler’s message to policy makers that college has deviated from its original purpose of providing everyone with an equal chance of obtaining social and economic mobility. In fact, college education has turned into the complete opposite. She cites factors such as neglect by the government on education policies and unregulated for-profit education has reason higher education has become unleveled. ...ng on college athletics, the focus would be how to make their schools more affordable for all students. Just like in the NCAA, the schools well be divided into conferences. For example, the Ivy League schools would have their own conference and the elite STEM schools would have their own as well. Within the conferences, the schools are free to negotiate average tuition prices, financial aid options for students and other interests. However, the conferences will be regulated by a governing board in which the heads of each conference will a seat on a board with an president selected among them. With a system in place like this, my hope is that it will promote economic diversity in higher education so that any student will be able to attend and afford college so that they can have their chance at social and economic mobility and equal opportunity in higher education.
