Choosing a Theory or Model for Program Planning:
Health promotion is a process that usually requires the selection of an appropriate theory or model for program planning. These health promotion theories or models provide mechanisms that can be used to systematically design programs for behavior change. The use of the models on theories in turn contributes to the effectiveness and efficiency of the health promotion program. Since not all theories or models are effective for all situations, it is important to choose one that addresses variables contributing to an individual’s behavior. This consideration is part of determining the most relevant theory or model for the problem and target population. In conclusion, the problem of childhood obesity is a global epidemic that has continued to spread due to individual, environmental, and societal factors. Due to its spread and effects, there is a great need to develop appropriate intervention measures and programs through theories and models of behavior change. The most appropriate theories and models are the Transtheoretical Model and Social Cognitive Theory.
