We determine what is important in history by how much it impacts the future. Events such as the Revolutionary War and Civil War will always be remembered in U.S. history. They had such a large impact on the shaping of our country and therefore will never be forgotten. Other events, however, such as the 1750 London earthquake is something not many people know about. Many parts of history will and have stood the test of time. World War I and II will both be remembered. They stay remembered because of how they affected the world. In both World Wars over 40 million people died. Other parts of history have faded away such as the War of 1812. It has faded away a bit because “only” around 23,000 people died. Things that happened during the Civil War that may have seemed important are replaced with things that may seem more important to us now.
The deadliest war known to mankind was World War I the total of military and civilian casualties were more than 38 million. World War I began in Europe July 28th, 1914 and lasted until November 11th, 1918. The following countries that took part in the war were Britain, France, Russia, United States, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, Serbia, and Italy. Since there were many deaths it left European nations to blame one another for the violent actions that lead up to the crisis. The underlying cause of World War I was both alliances and imperialism.
World war 1 was a brutal war that could have been prevented if Germany didn’t strike back at the assassination of the Arch Duke Franz. Once Germany invaded Poland the war broke out to a horrifying fight that impacted every country. World War 1 was also known as The Great War that took place from 1914-1918 within most parts of Europe. Within this informative essay I will be talking about the features, the results, the end, and how World War 1 changed the lives of the Europeans.
On January 8, 1918, Woodrow Wilson went to Congress to announce his ideas regarding the war affairs of America. He created something known as the Fourteen Points, a plan that would determine the foreign affairs of the United States after World War I (Brower). When looking at the points, it is easy to identify how these were similar in nature, allowing them to be grouped. The first group deals with the points one, two, three, four, and five. These points dealt with the idea of how to maintain peace between nations and reduce the chance of imperialism and war. Instantly, the idea of peace is introduced, as the first point begins with “Open covenants of peace” proving the importance of maintaining peace (“Woodrow Wilson”). Moreover, Wilson aimed to unite the nations of the world peacefully by granting nations the “freedom” to navigate seas, removing “economic barriers” that hindered trade, reducing “national armaments” based on the threat a country faces, and allowing “ free, open-minded, and absolutely impartial adjustment of all colonial claims” (“Woodrow Wilson”). These five points came together to guarantee the freedom of each nation, as no nation would have a stronger military or control over the seas. Plus, trade would be less expensive, allowing stronger relations between the countries.
War is what keeps a nation from dying, it is the backbone of a country. This is the shown throughout the course of World War I, also known as “the war to end all wars.” World War I started in the summer of 1914. Archduke Francis Ferdinand, from the Austro – Hungarian Empire was visiting Bosnia. He was shot, along with his wife, Sofia, by a young man from the Black Hand, Gavrillo Princip. What were the three main factors that started World War I? There were three main underlying causes that started World War I: greed, nationalism, and militarism.
The United States has been involved in many wars since its inception. WWII in particular had a significant impact on the world and the United States. Through the years 1939 to 1945 the majority of the world suffered many tragedies and hardships. In total, 50 million people died including women, children, civilians, and innocent bystanders. Adolf Hitler, the leader of Nazi Germany, was responsible for a significant amount of these deaths. Hitler, aligned with Japan, wanted to seize all of Europe and Japan wanted to conquer Asia. A major cause of WWII was that Germany strongly disapproved of the Treaty of Versailles. Germany especially didn’t like that they had to accept all the blame for WWI, paying $ 6,600 million for the damage they caused in WWI, and they were only allowed to have a small army and six naval ships, no tanks, no air force and no submarines were allowed. Also, the Rhineland area was to be de-militarized and taken out of Germany’s possession. All of these conditions were written in the Treaty of Versailles. During the war the world formed two sides, the Allies and the Axis Powers. The Allies included Britain, the Soviet Union, and the United States, known as “the Big 3”. The Axis Powers included Germany, Italy, and Japan. At the end of the war the Allies were triumphant and the world gained its peace.
With the Great War beginning over a hundred years ago in 1914 there are no survivors left to reflect or corroborate any first hand accounts of the war that ushered in deadly new practices like trench and chemical warfare. Paul Fussels book The Great War and Modern Memory explores not only the firsthand accounts but also literature to the subject published during that time. There are no shortage of war memories detailed in Fussels book, and many of them look into experiences had by soldiers during the war that are unique only to them. In a book that sets out to chronicle the memory of all of World War I why are these specific memories included? After a twenty- year hiatus, World War II began between the Axis powers, and the Allied powers. World War II should be remembered because of the bravery of the soldiers, the uniting of countries, and the patriotism of soldiers.

Since humans are the sole beneficiaries of history, it is important for us to know what the purpose of history is and how historians include their own perspective concerning historical events. The purpose and perspective of history is vital in order for individuals to realise how it would be almost impossible for us to live out our lives effectively if we had no knowledge of the past. Also, in order to gain a sound knowledge of the past, we have to understand the political, social and cultural aspects of the times we are studying.
World War One was a war that would change the way countries fight their battles for the rest of time. The large economies previous to the war allowed countries to create technology, and weapons that would create more damage than ever seen before. There were more countries, and better technology which caused this war to be the most brutal in the world’s history. It introduced things such as airplanes, tanks, grenades, automatic weapons, and the horrific trench warfare. This was a war so destructive that President Wilson would stay out of and keep the United States neutral, causing an economic boom from selling weapons to European countries; until it was time for the U.S. to get involved. Money, technology, and the friendship of countries would end up in a horrific mess that would scar the world forever.
The First World War took place between 1914 to 1918.It was a surprise to many and left many questions than answers to the problems that those who caused it sought to answer. It was a different form of war compared to the kind of wars that used to happen at that time. It was more brutal and violent. Prior to the start of this war, most of the then major world societies had experienced a revolution. The war left many people questioning on the future of the world at a time when there was many inventions. The inventions include electricity and the telephone among others. Most people believed the idea that humans were capable of destroying themselves.
History is a very important part of everyday life because without a past there can be no future, therefore making it impossible for society to progress. History is probably the most important thing in modern life, because we can learn so much from what has happened in past. A strong knowledge of global history is essential now in both the social scene and in the workplace because the world around us is quickly becoming one large group of people, and these people can be from pretty much anywhere in the world. Cultural backgrounds are really dissolving, and some countries don't really have a prominent race. The United States for example is not predominantly white anymore, and many of its citizens are immigrants from other countries. Knowledge is the key to the world, and history is always going to be an important subject. History has so many different uses, and is used by everyone at some point in their lives. Even the government uses history in some of their decision making processes. In most schools, history and social studies are classes that most students take in middle school. Some people don't believe that history should be taught in schools, or anywhere for that matter. These people don't think that history is accurate, and that stories in history could have been changed over the thousand times that they were told. History is important nonetheless, and by learning about our past, a bright future is basically guaranteed.
It is important to study history because it teaches us about not only our own culture but about cultures all around the world. Learning about other cultures and how they look a the world and what their opinion on certain things are , helps us learn better ways of avoiding conflicts. History is just a way of getting us to understand human life and helping us embrace new ways of making a healthier lifestyle. In my opinion, an event is significant if it is still remembered today, meaning that it is used in films, written about in books, and when people watch these films or read books, it could raise issues in their mind which also makes an event significant. If it was really important at the time, like all the soldiers died, which was only important to the US and Vietnam at the time but as for the entire country in the long term it was not important. Significance is more than just how important an event is. It describes the impact of the event on other countries involved as well as the world as a whole. In my essay I will explain how far I agree with the statement, by looking at the ways the Vietnam War was significant in both the long and short term.
