Consumerism is an economic theory which says that all products are economically beneficial when consumed in progressively greater amounts. The advertisements provided are great examples of why this is and is not true. Jello when consumed in larger amounts can help society be more productive by reducing time in the kitchen. However winston cigarettes consumed in progressively greater amounts cause cancer and other harmful effects to the people and the economy. Additionally Barbie also negatively affects the economy by damaging the idea of body image and wasting resources that could be used elsewhere.

However this has not always been in the best interest of the public. The people who smoke spend outrageous amounts of money on this habit and have even more dire consequences with their health. Instead of accurately informing the public, companies such as Winston cigarettes uses popular culture like the flintstones to push their addictive and harmful product. Winston uses the idea of consumerism, which is the only way to grow and make a profit as a company is to sell the most to the most amount of people. Even if the most amount of people is children that have not learned the harmful effects of cigarettes yet. Cigarettes are addictive due to nicotine and once started are very hard to stop. That being said using a kids cartoon such as the flintstones to market their product is harmful to all consumers and the economy. The kids get addicted to cigarettes and then later in life become less productive in the workforce because of health concerns or taking too many smoke breaks. In turn health premiums go up for everyone in the country because the companies have to cover the cost of the smokers and those even affected by secondhand smoke. The Barbie is a simple toy, just a plastic woman with bendable arms and legs. The Barbie ad is simple, but will appeal to millions of girls, Barbie is advertised as a “teenage fashion model, which is where problems come into play. The effects of the image of Barbie have come into view. Barbie is made with unrealistic and unattainable dimensions for a real woman. Barbie has a large bust, tiny neck, legs, and arms, and an unattainable hip to waist ratio. As very young girls play with Barbies they begin to believe at a very young age that Barbie is what they are suppose to look like, Barbie is perfect, that must be why everyone has one. If Barbie was created with attainable body dimensions the negative effects would be far greater and numerous young children would not be continually striving for something which is not attainable, but has been impacting them for years. Additionally Barbie is harmful to the economy as a whole because it uses resources such as plastic, energy, and manpower to produce.
