Volleyball, which was invented in 1895 by using different aspects of basketball and tennis, has grown to be the second most played sport in the world (Volleyball History 1). Volleyball started as a recreational game played in local YMCAs and today is now played at all school levels including college, in the Olympics, and professionally. Volleyball is a amusing sport that can be played by anyone, at any skill level, indoors or outdoors, and even on the beach.
William G Morgan created volleyball. Morgan was born in Lockport, New York, and lived from 1870 to 1942. He graduated from Springfield College where he met James Naismith. Naismith was the inventor of basketball. Morgan was influenced by Naismith and invented the sport “Mintonette” on February 9, 1895, which name was later changed to “Volleyball” …show more content…

When creating Mintonette, Morgan wanted to create the ultimate sport that anybody would be able play. Morgan thought of a variety of different sports when creating Mintonette, including tennis and basketball. He used the net from tennis, but increased the height by six feet six inches. He used a leather ball similar to the one used for a basketball (Herbert 56). Mintonette, volleyball, began when Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick, director of YMCA, invited Morgan to demonstration his new game in a new college stadium.
Morgan’s game of Mintonette was changed rapidly. The first thing that was changed was the name. Mintonette was changed by Alfred S. Halstead to “volley ball”. Dr. Frank Wood and John Lynch helped with the first set of rules for Mintonette (Volleyball History 1). Many of the original rules changed over time.
