Online classes have similarities and differences in the way they provide education to students. Online classes may be a good fit for one student, and other students may prefer to take traditional classes exclusively as that is what works best for them. Everyone is different, and what works for one person does not always work for everyone else. Online classes are time consuming like any other class, but time spent working on assignments can be broken down into smaller time increments. Online classes are also more flexible than traditional classes because they do not meet in person, giving students the advantage of making their own schedule for working on assignments that they can integrate into their personal life. Online students get to choose days and times that are convenient for them, and do it from the comfort of their own home. The first way traditional classes offer less flexibility is students have limited options for classes, they can only choose between day or evening classes. This is a lot less convenient for busy individuals. The second way traditional classes offer less flexibility is having a strict schedule of when assignments are to be completed and turned it. The schedule is predetermined by the professor, meaning they control when the assignments are to be completed. However, when a student takes an online class the student and professor are at a disadvantage of building an interpersonal relationship. For example, a professor is unable to read the nonverbal cues of a struggling student through a computer screen or is unable to tell if a student is experiencing a true emergency. Just as, a student is unable to read their professors nonverbal cues that a particular chapter or assignment is vital to passing the course. I have taken classes on campus and online classes for three semesters now and have learned that regardless of class format a student needs to be dedicated, structured, self-motivated and not afraid to ask questions. A disadvantage of taking an online class is if a web portal is not working properly.
One of the reasons for online courses to be offered in colleges is level of comfort. In this case, students get less intimidated by some students around them in classrooms. Because there are students who smell bad and have rude personality, some students are likely to be uncomfortable around them and lose focus in class discussions. Additionally, students, especially ESL students who have a hard time speaking and writing in English can think longer than usual about what they want to say before saying it to avoid the usage of wrong grammar. Moreover, with online classes, students get more involved in discussions. Those students who are shy, quiet, and hesitant are likely to participate. As a result, they become more open, less shy, and more comfortable in discussions. According to Sara Cordell, a professor of English at the University of Illinois-Springfield, students attend and listen in her online class; furthermore, because students enjoy speaking with each other, and typing to each other, they get to engross actual time with other students as much as with her which fascinates her (Abramson). In brief, the major reason for more online courses to be offered in colleges is the comfort level of students because not all students are comfortable with other students around them in classrooms.
With traditional face to face courses, course sections are defined based not only on instructional availability but also student schedule necessity. As students and faculty cannot be in two classes at once many sections of the same class must be offered to accommodate the many scheduling conflicts, even though class sizes may be small. With online courses, primarily due to their flexible time schedules, class sections can be made based only on enrollment numbers and faculty class load. This consolidation can allow institutions to keep costs low, and possibly offer a more diverse catalog of courses. Hybrid courses are an added benefit of colleges going online.

I used to have the similar misconception about online courses that they are easy, and effective, but after taking few online course in Community College, I started realizing that online courses are not as easy as we think. In my own personal experience, online courses are loaded with more assignments, projects, and different activities to engage students more in the courses, which is sometimes challenging to keep up with the class schedule, but it is required, since face-to-face interactions are hardly possible to determine how students are performing in the online courses, and those are the only means of evaluation for online students. Sometimes it is very difficult to explain the particular situations and problems we are having in the course

Also, if a student misses a class due to an illness or some other sort of reason they will get behind in classes, while with online class the student can still work while sick or the class will not move on without them. State University students can especially relate at this time of year, the peak time for registering for spring classes. Finding classes that fit in between clubs, organizations, work schedules, family commitments, and other classes seems like an impossible task. Many students on college campuses across the nation are turning to online classes, a flexible alternative that allows students to juggle their busy schedules while keeping on track for graduation. On paper, the idea of substituting time consuming traditional classes for the more flexible alternative of online classes sounds decent. However, do students really get the same education out of these online classes as their traditional counterparts? How can a class formatted for online consumption possibly give students all the material they have to learn in a way that is meaningful and easy to understand? The unfortunate truth is that these online classes cannot replace traditional physical classrooms.
