There are twenty-four hours in a day. So, eighteen hours is almost an entire day. Eighteen hours is also the amount of time the average student goes without eating due to lunch schedules in coordination with supper times (Murray). This does not even evaluate factors such as extracurricular activities and a possible work schedule. Not only is this an outstanding number, but it is also an unhealthy one. It should not be the accepted norm for students to just suffer through hunger as this is not how the body works. When the body is hungry, it means it is time to eat, and going against this instinct leads to unhealthy eating habits and malnutrition. An easy solution to this problem is allowing students to eat in school by implementing occasional …show more content…
Although this is a concerning matter and hazardous to other students, the situation can be effortlessly solved by putting restrictions in the classroom as to what can be eaten depending on the allergies that classmates have. An easily implemented solution can be utilized by having students fill out an allergy form and making it clear to all students if there is an allergy. Teachers also shy away from the idea of eating in class because of the distractions caused by the noise and the mess which can cause a disruption in the learning process (Brozak). This can also be solved by allowing students to take frequent breaks to eat in class. This way, they do not distract other students. If there is designated time for eating, the issue of interference with class time would not occur. Disciplinary actions can also be set for the students who do not clean up after themselves. Because staying hungry distracts the students, eating in class will help them stay focused, awake, and excited to learn. The mix of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation will allow for these policies to stay
These children are more likely to act out in public, get impatient and frustrated easily (Eric Jensen, 2009). Proper nutrition affects educational outcome as well. Malnutrition and hungry are a deterrent to affective learning, by increasing illness and lowering the student’s
Schools are meant to give our children a healthy and nurturing environment, and yet so much of the lunches in schools are fattening; does this stop schools from achieving the aforementioned goal? Childhood obesity in the United Sates continues to be a growing problem despite so any new programs to help combat it, and new research is showing how schools may be playing a large role in childhood obesity. School lunches are showing to be the problem, they encourage poor nutrition in our nation’s students, and simple reform is proving to not be enough to stop the rise in obesity rates.
According to the Journal of Law and Health schools that have not banned junk food have had an increase in students more excited to learn because of the sugar count unhealthy foods. Looking at the evidence regarding school lunches from the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture), students need equal grain and protein proportions to have a healthy daily diet, and over the course of 5 years schools that don't have a healthy lunch program have had their students overall GPA almost completely equivalent to the schools that have had the healthy lunch program. Although having tremendously unhealthy school lunches may not harm your GPA it can immensely harm your health. Lots of average students health are in danger just because of unhealthy school lunches, it is very necessary that schools realize that a healthy lunch program is always a beneficial option. Scientists have found that children who have healthier breakfast and lunch get better grades and have increased brain power. Some evidence points to unhealthy food but healthy food is always the answer in an effective school community. Sometimes unhealthy food is cheaper and tastes better but it can be very costly to your health especially as a
This could result in terrible grades. Also, this would interfere with extra-curricular actives, such as sports. With less time to do homework, students might not be able to do sports, and would become unhealthy. Students can get bullied for their weight or size. Others might not think they are comely. Also, with less time to do work, students can get terrible grades. The consequences of long lunches are unacceptable. We cannot do
Active students, or students participating in sports, can achieve their nutritional needs with this second serving. On the other hand, less active students nutritional needs are met with the serving size given to them. A broad calorie restriction will not meet the needs of all students. Allowing for greater diversity in lunch choices will, consequently, meet the nutritional needs of more students.
On campus, this problem does result in leaving students hungry. They are seen scarfing down their food after arriving 10 minutes late to class, because the cafeteria was going to close for the rest of the day. Student's stomachs are heard growling, which disturbs the class when in full concentration. Hungry students then do not pay attention in class and causes a domino affect in others stomachs growling, leaving and going between classes, and other disturbances.
Open lunch or off campus lunch is a large controversial topic among high schools and other schooling systems. What are some of the benefits of having an open lunch, some reasons why school lunches are not very good, how open lunch can help the school save money and the community gain money, and why some people think school lunches should be closed because students can not be trusted. Schools need to have open lunches because school lunches are not filling enough and students can be trusted. There are many benefits of open lunch here are a few.
First, the school does not do an adequate job at providing food for all of its students. The lines at the cafeteria can take forever and by the time people get their food, lunch can be over. Majority of teachers on campus also do not allow kids to eat in class so they will end up wasting money on food and being deprived of their lunch. The amount of food available is also pretty scarce. I often find the cafeteria running out of the only good food to which I am then forced to eat the other bland
“Schools become the ‘last frontier’ for hungry kids.” usatoday.com). Thus, many students do not carry the proper balance of nutrition through school that conceals the students indoors through the school day. Students are in a constant battle for motivation in the classroom atmosphere that does not consider a student’s pace while learning. Today, students in community schools from Michigan seldom use open campus privileges. (Johnson, Adrian. “Should high schools have open campus for lunch?” www.mlive.com). Students’ are required to stay on campus to abstain from the increase of truancy leading to missing instructional
“New School lunch standards implemented as a result of First Lady Michelle Obama’s anti-obesity campaign have led to more than 1 million children leaving the lunch line, according to a new report.” (Elizabeth Harrington 3). Because of The Healthy and Hunger-Free Kids Act “ New meals are required to offer a whole grain, protein, fat free or low fat milk, fruits and vegetables”(Arit John 10). Even if the government regulates school lunches to prevent obesity and diabetes, the government should not be able to regulate them because students are not happy with the new school nutrition requirements, schools should be responsible for providing a nutritious lunch children will eat.
Jeff Reiche, principal at Marathon Elementary School says, “I’ve seen a decrease in the number of kids eating hot lunch and I think it’s due to the serving size. I think for our middle school kids the serving size has really decreased to the point where kids are going home hungry” (Normand). Many students are hungry by the end of the day. Children who participate in extra-curricular activities after school may be even hungrier by the time they get to go home. It is important to keep kids’ stomachs full so they are focused in class and they do not pass out during
In other words, the food is not delicious and there are not many choices. Also, when children don’t get proper nutrition, they have trouble focusing on school. Most students do not buy lunch because they feel it is unappealing and do not like the food served. Many students go to other kids and ask for food. In addition, many students do not eat breakfast, so they rely on lunch to fuel them for the day.
Many of these children only get a full meal while having their school lunch, so many of these children go hungry the rest of the day.
Ban Junk Food Junk food. Is it the responsibility of schools to ban junk food and promote a healthy lifestyle for children of all ages between 6-18? Yes, yes it is. In my opinion, schools promoting a healthy lifestyle is as important as the children’s parents’ responsibility. Schools have as much impact in that department as children are fed during school hours.
We should be able to eat and/or drink in class, what we want, when we want. The main reason I feel this particular way, is because there’s no reason a person should have to go eight in the morning or before until noon or after without eating or drinking something. (If you are in high school, that is). Another one of the main reasons I feel this way is because some kids have problems involving food, such as diabetes. Another possible problem might be hypoglycemia, which, in fact, I have. Hyperglycemia is another major problem in this world. I also believe that students can focus and learn more on a full stomach. Not just because I am, in fact, a student, but because I have been in the situation where I’m hungry and I can’t concentrate on anything, except my stomach and it’s cravings for food.
