Unfortunately, when schools do have healthy ingredients, the food is usually prep... ... middle of paper ... ... in food in the cafeteria lead to clogging the arteries that eventually lead to heart diseases (Ardis). Nevertheless, artificial sweeteners have not been tested in humans and show kids they are healthier, rather than real sugar and real sweeteners, when in reality they contain ingredients that can cause cancer. To conclude, unhealthy foods in the cafeteria and the vending machines are the worst examples for the kids to maintain the healthy eating habits. Us Parents have to step in to make changes for our kids because in doing so would determine what kind of foods our kids are consuming. We do know for facts they are not getting the proper nutrients while in school, although they do spend in average of eight to 12 hours in schools.
The majority of foods in the schools around the United States are junk food. The food a child consumes at a school is usually fattening and can lead to diseases mentioned before. Another problem with a child not eating properly is not receiving the vitamins and minerals he/ she desires. A change that was made to provide healthy lunches is to give the students one cup of fruits and a decent meal size. Schuna has done research as to why the lunches are a major health concern and she discusses ways to resolve and/ or prevent these health issues.
Some people are also arguing that it is impossible to implement these new rules. Childhood obesity is a growing epidemic in America. It is the responsibility of the schools, and the people involved with providing the school lunch and breakfast to deal with this problem and provide healthful lunch and breakfast. The Hunger-Free Kids Act of 1995 was introduced by the Department of Agriculture to take on the problem of malnutrition in kids. Those dietary guidelines have been followed since by the schools.
Many parents of the students at these schools were outraged to find out that their healthy, homemade lunches were being replaced by the schools gluten-filled meals. According to James Joyner of Outside The Beltway a preschooler had gotten her bagged lunch taken away because an official at her school labeled it as “unhealthy”. The young girls lunch consisted of a turkey & cheese sandwich, a banana, chips, and an apple juice pouch. Her lunch was said to not have “met the USDA guidelines”. USDA guidelines state that lunches (whether they’re brought from home or supplied by the school) must include one serving of the following: grain, milk(dairy), meat(protein), and either a fruit or vegetable.
Schools around the world have different opinions toward junk food, to either provide it in schools or not. Many students do not qualify for school meal programs which leads to students to eat unhealthy junk food during lunch. If schools really want to stop child obesities, schools need to find a way to allow all students to be accepted for meal plans. It’s not fair for those students who do not get to eat a healthy lunch on a daily
The National School Lunch Program has set standards on what school lunch should be like, but these standards are rarely met by schools (Curtis). Furthermore, this only applies to the school lunch being prepared, and not for everything being sold; cookies, candy, and chips don't have any requirements. The food that is served has been preserved with large amounts of sodium and frozen in order for it to be stored for months before use, which is very unhealthy. The meat being imported doesn't even meet popular fast food companies' standards, and because of this, it's been concluded that school lunches are actually less healthy than fast food. Companies such as Sodexo ship large quantities of food to schools all over the country.
The more access kids have with unhealthy food, is the schools because schools have junk foods and how hard is it to ask mom or dad for some money for they can get some chips, pop, candy and all those unhealthy snacks, and not getting yelled at by their parents. Because of obesity the number is increasing in America we should ban all junk foods from schools. More than 40 percent of children are over weight mostly because of unhealthy foods and lack of exercise. The parents should be more involved in the kids eating habits. They should talk with their children what they can or can’t eat on the school menus.
Children eat the quickest meal with the most sugar and fat (among other unhealthy ingredients). This habit needs to be broken to take better care of the children today. Children are eating snack cakes and other junk foods at school instead of the breakfast/lunch that is offered causing bad habits and a poor diet. The children of America are suffering from the effects of malnutrition and yet, society does not help them to better understand or give higher grade options for them to choose from. Therefore, junk food should not be allowed in schools as it imposes health risks on children, lacks requirements for the nutrition contained in them, and without offering them, children would learn many morals/lessons.
Because of this the CPAG found that “in 2005 food banks reported the greatest increase in the number of people seeking help coming from working families”. For those who genuinely can’t afford to provide their children with nutritional breakfasts, Breakfast in Schools is the perfect solution to their children going to school hungry having a negative impact on their grades. “There is now a substantial body of research showing breakfast consumption contributes to a students academic and school attendance” (Rampersaud 2005). However there could be some families that would abuse this concept. They could not feed their children breakfast with the knowledge that there is a nutrition... ... middle of paper ... ... by the CPAG, shows that “the reasoning is simple: hungry children do not learn- feeding them improves their attendance, nutritional status and academic performance and behaviour”.
In America itself only about two percent of kids eat a healthy diet. The topic I selected is if changes should be made to the regulation for food being served in public schools. I say yes, the school food menus should be changed in all public schools. The main reason I selected this article is because America is unhealthy in general and obesity is on the rise mainly due to the fact of unhealthy food. Also I went to public schools for over a decade and have seen the unhealthy food that is being served.
