I have a passion to help people and love to serve the community, this is the main reason I want to become a social worker. One of the things that inspired me the most about becoming a social worker is the compassion a social worker have for people and the willingness to help them. While growing up, I always knew I wanted to help people better themselves and felt like a medical position was the only helping professions until I got older and started exploring my options in college. Being a social worker to me means you have to be reliable, trustworthy, and an understanding person. Doing community service always gives me a warm feeling; there is no better feeling than knowing you are doing something for a good cause and can turn someone frown into a smile. One of the main factors that influence my decision to choose the social work profession is being a mentor for Big Brother Big Sister. While volunteering as a big sister, I learned that so many children go through situations that I never thought a kid could experience. Going to visit my little sister and talking to her once a week for an hour always left me thinking of ways I could improve their living conditions. The time I spent with my little I learned so much about her and her strengths. I also learned why she felt the need to misbehave in class, but after comforting and talking to her, she actually started improving. Another factor that inspired me to be a social worker is working with people whom were in and out of group homes throughout their life. Listening to my co-workers stories has made me wonder what I could do to eliminate children from going in and out of group homes. I believe as a social worker I could improve their desire to stay with the families and have a more enjoyable home
