I have a passion to help people and love to serve the community, this is the main reason I want to become a social worker. One of the things that inspired me the most about becoming a social worker is the compassion a social worker have for people and the willingness to help them. Doing community service always gives me a warm feeling; there is no better feeling than knowing you are doing something for a good cause and can turn someone frown into a smile. One of the main factors that influence my decision to choose the social work profession is being a mentor for Big Brother Big Sister. While volunteering as a big sister, I learned that so many children go through situations that I never thought a kid could experience. Going to visit my little sister and talking to her once a week for an hour always left me thinking of ways I could improve their living conditions. The time I spent with my little I learned so much about her and her strengths. I also learned why she felt the need to misbehave in class, but after comforting and talking to her, she actually started improving. Another factor that inspired me to be a social worker is working with people whom were in and out of group homes throughout their life. Listening to my co-workers stories has made me wonder what I could do to eliminate children from going in and out of group homes. I believe as a social worker I could improve their desire to stay with the families and have a more enjoyable home
My motivation to be a social worker initially came up by my aunt. Since childhood, I realized that my aunt, a Macanese, was a deaf. Even though our conversation relied on a pen and pieces of paper, we had tight relationship. Unfortunately, my aunt split from his husband spontaneously due to my uncle’s adultery. After that, aunt lost her interest in everything, even making communication with their children. She persistently felt anxious and got hallucination lately. When I was in high school, my aunt was diagnosed as suffering from depression, a seriously one. For quite a long period, my mother stayed at Macau to accompany with my aunt. At that time, I wrote many letters to her on the grounds that I believed words could deliver positive energy. Subsequently, my letters seemed to cut ice with my aunt. She told me that reading my letters could ease her anxiety and enhanced her to stay positive in a day.
Kris became a social worker because she has a passion and needs to help people. Her passion comes from years of abuse and neglect when she was younger. She stated, “It feels right to be a social worker. Although there is no thank you cards and the work may be meticulous at times, seeing smiles is a great reward”. I have learned most social workers enter this career due to personal experiences and they were to help make a change. I am one of them. Although I know I cannot change the world, I know I can make a difference in the lives I touch. I too will find the smiles of my clients
They want to work with people and help them improve their lives. People wanting to be social workers need to be able to manage a sometimes heavy workload and manage their time effectively. They also need to keep effective notes on their cases for other professionals to be able to access and understand the best outcomes of the service user.
As a social worker, I have been able to use my skills I have learned in the field and my college education. I have values, beliefs, and ethics that I have used to center my social work career around. I also acknowledge as a social worker, I cannot push my values, beliefs, and ethics onto others. Every person does not share the same values, beliefs and ethics.
My passion to become a social worker began when I was pursuing an undergraduate degree. From a young age because of my compassion and empathetic nature, I knew that I wanted to work inside the human service field. I wanted to use my personal characteristics to improve individual’s lives. Social work was my calling because of the many different areas in the field that are all primarily focused on making a difference. I am interested in clinical social work, working with individuals and families.
I have chosen social work as a profession because of my passion to help others. I want to make a difference in someone’s life and help them through the problems they are having. Whether the client needs counseling, guidance, or advocacy I want to be the person to help them. My drive for helping others and motivation to change social policies for the better is why I have chosen social work as my future profession.
I chose to pursue a degree in Social Work because I have a deep passion for helping people figure things out and get back on track. I have always tried to help people in the simplest ways without being over intrusive and giving them the respect and dignity they deserve. As a teen I found joy in the slightest things like helping people fill out and submit job applications, filling out medical forms, and explaining to them the process for things such as obtaining Medicaid, food stamps, their food handlers card and even on where and how to apply for your driver’s license. These things may seem trivial but I guarantee that for many people this was a huge help. Working with people is not just something that happens; first you have to want to help people and be patient and understanding with the people who you are helping and that does not happen overnight, second, you must be able to recognize your own limitations and know when to refer someone to qualified professionals.
Have you ever thought about your future job? How you plan to be something that someone else is not? I have always dreamed of being something in a field where you care for others. I love to care for others. For me, being able to help someone is my pride and joy.
I believe that Social work is one of the most important professions there are because without social work there would not be that strong support system that many individuals need to keep them selves going. To be a social worker there are some important traits that a person needs in order to provide the best job possible in helping their clients to succeed. A social worker must have the traits of empathy, patientience, dependable, organized, flexible, persistent and objective. Not only should a social worker have these traits; they should also take pride, honor and follow the six social work core values. The six core social work vales are service, social justice, Human dignity and worth of all people, importance of human relationships, Integrity and cultural competence (Cummins, L., Sevel, J., & Pedrick, L. (2012). Social workers provide the best resources available to their clients as well as enhance human well-being and help meet the basic needs of all people, with attention to individuals that are oppressed and living in poverty (Cummins, et al., 2012). Caring and having empathy towards others plays an important role for a social worker and I believe I am fit to be a social worker. Growing up I saw a lot of violence, and after seeing that occur, I knew that I wanted to become a social worker to make a change in people's lives. I am interested in this topic because I enjoy helping others. Social work began in the late 1800s, but later in the 1900s, it developed more clearly into what we think of social work today. In order to become a social worker, I plan to attend college and receive my Bachelors in Social Work and then I will work my way up to get my Masters in Social Work. After receiving my masters, I will need to intern to be able to take a national test to become a licensed social worker
I want to become a social worker to help connect people to available resources when they may be in a place of injustice or despair and offer them the guidance they may need to make important decisions that can be life changing. Also, I am interested in being a social worker because the work can be extremely rewarding. I do understand, some days will be extremely difficult, but I also understand that when you can go home at the end of the day, knowing you’ve done your best to help someone, that is a rewarding feeling and I will know that I chosen the right career path. My first obstacle in becoming the social worker I envision is myself. As a Southern woman, I was taught to pray, have good manners, to cook, not to display behaviors in public unbecoming of a lady, to honor my word, and that it was my duty to help those in need. These principles speak to the social work values of service by helping others, integrity in being honest and ethical in the things I say, and dignity and worth of a person, by treating others in a respectful manner.
My interest in social work stems from a love of volunteering that I possessed ever since I was a young child expressing great enthusiasm for church and school service events. As I grew older, I began volunteering for many other community events, such as serving over 200 hours at a local hospital, helping with free cancer screenings, and fitting children with free bike helmets. I even created my own donation drive for a local women’s and children’s shelter. I feel the best when I am striving to create positive changes in my community and for struggling, marginalized individuals. Social services have been a part of my life for a very long time, and I want it to continue to be on a professional level.
The personal qualities that I equip for the social work profession is the ability to work effectively with people from diverse populations. I was born and raised in a community composed of diverse populations which has given the training/knowledge to become a social worker. Social workers are described as “helpers,” because they help others resolve problems, obtain resources, provide support during crises, and facilitate social responses to needs. In my opinion, to be a social worker, you need to have a passion for helping others. Having personal experiences in the field of social work you want to work in is also good to have.
