I haven't always had the strong academic focus, desire to learn, and achievements that are shown in my application. The elementary and middle school I attended focused on hands-on practical learning, the arts, and a small classroom environment while de-emphasizing grades. In theory, this approach was supposed to produce well-rounded students who cared deeply about learning and were not pressured by grade point averages. Unfortunately, the way in which the curriculum was presented failed to inspire a desire to learn or to achieve high academic performance. I became increasingly frustrated with the quality of the teachers as I grew older and realized that I had to make a change. I choose to homeschool 8th grade in order to catch up to an academic standard that would allow me …show more content…
In an incoming student assessment, I scored at a sixth grade level in English, but I was not deterred. I began high school in a completely foreign social environment, but quickly found the peer and teacher support I was lacking earlier. I went from a remedial level in English to an accelerated English class by my sophomore year to advanced placement English by my junior year. My high school courses challenged me to be an independent thinker and to strive to understand what it means to be a member of society. My senior year I completed an extended service project working over 100 hours building two houses for Habitat for Humanity and raising money for the families that would later inhabit the homes I helped complete. I not only volunteered my labor, but I spent time researching the challenges of solving housing shortages in my community and nationwide. In college, I built on my educational foundation and commitment to making a positive social
Homeschooling offers flexibility and can be a stress reliever for many. Home school gives children the opportunity to learn when they learn best, whether that be in the morning or in the afternoon. Some children prefer to work alone others with their peers. The parents will determine what their child’s learning style is. If the child need more or less time on a subject then they will have the chance to go over the subject as many time it is necessary for the student to learn it, or in the other hand if they completely comprehend the subject they can make a decision to skip it. A flexible schedule gives these options and many more to students compared to public or private schooling.
During my years in high school, I have learned many valuable lessons. I’m proud of the person I am becoming. Life has not been easy, but thankfully I’m a strong hard worker. I started high school with a high GPA, and never intended for it to drop throughout my years. Within the last three years, I’ve moved around, participated in sports, and got a job.
Home schooling provides a different look on today’s educational system. Although I would support that every American child should receive at least two years of public school before graduating from high school. Homeschooling is becoming more popular every day, with a growth rate of 7 to 15 percent per year according to Vicki Bentley HSLDA Toddlers to Tweens Coordinator. There are many aspects of homeschooling that someone should consider, financial commitment, social interaction, physical exercise, the commitment parents have, and how it affects the student going to college. I personally have been on both sides of this issue. I have been homeschooled and I have been to public school. Student should have
Throughout the fall semester I did community service at a thrift shop and soup kitchen in Lawrence. There I experienced things I have never encountered before in my life. These experiences have taught me a lot, and have truly made me look at America's underprivileged, in a new light.
When I graduated from Delran High School in 2007, I had these same positive and desirable attributes, but I was lacking in direction and purpose. It was an extremely stressful time for me as a teenager and young adult as my family and home life was deteriorating. My parents were in the midst of an ugly divorce, my father was a terrible alcoholic who would soon go on to lose his bread-winning job, our house was constantly under possible foreclosure, and I had two younger siblings to help take care of. I quickly found a full-time job and applied to take classes full-time at Burlington County College. I became overwhelmed with the “real world” responsibilities of providing for my family and
High school was not a completely dreadful experience, but I did not get a really an exceptional education. As I entered high school, I thought it would be a whole new exciting chapter in my life. I started out as an involved student, and went through all of the Advance Placement and Honor classes, and managed to be at the top 12% of my class. In high school, I basically placed myself to enjoy it; I joined all of the extra curricular activities I was interested in. I was in band, tennis, swimming, dance team, and Key Club. Sometimes I was at school for about fourteen hours a day, four times a week.
Many of my peers from grade school went on to four year universities with honors and scholarships. For myself graduating high school was the highest achievement thus far. I was not the most outstanding student during those years. I was insubordinate towards my educators and refused correction. I was known as a class clown and trouble maker. Unfourtantly mentally I did not consider myself to be a difficult individual, but special. I am
During my early education, meaning elementary school and middle school, I was a very average student. I gave an average amount of effort to my grades, and I received above average results. This did not bother me, until the end of my 8th-grade year. At this point in the year, I was filling out what classes I desired to take the following year, my freshman year. I realized that from this point forward, I had to take my education much more serious, in order to get accepted to whichever college I desired. therefore, when planning my classes, I decided to challenge myself more than I ever have in the past, and take multiple honors courses. I assumed because of my grades, that I had what it took to be an honors-level student, but I was very wrong. One teacher, Mrs. Johnson, made me realize the kind of effort, time and energy needed to be devoted to my education.
I never thought I would be taking a grade 12 university English, but I had two grade 8 teachers who believed in me. They told me that I am smart and if I took applied I would be bored. My teacher told me that I would probably get 60’s I’ve gotten 70’s. I have spent my entire High school career trying to prove that I am smart, I work hard and making honour roll my first semester felt like the Canadians taking the ridge, I did what most people can’t do. I did that for me so that I would have more
My High School life has helped shape the way for my college experiences that I will face. My senior year in high school is not the same as many other high school students. I am taking many advanced classes to help me prepare for college. These classes help me better understand exactly how much harder I must work to succeed.
“Is getting a good education important to you?” Most people when asked this question would answer, “Yes.” This is because it teaches us valuable life skills and prepares us to communicate and engage with others in the world. Education has taken on many forms over the years, and one of the more successful components of education has been homeschooling. Once considered a criminal act of defiance, homeschooling is now legally an option in all fifty states for parents to consider, and it has a substantial
Today, many parents are homeschooling their children. A U.S. Department of Education’s report shows that approximately 1.5 million children were being homeschooled in 2007 (Lips & Feinberg, 2008). This is almost 3 percent of all school age children (Lips & Feinberg, 2008). A private researcher, the National Home Education Research Institute, estimates 2.5 million children were being homeschooled in the 2007 – 2008 academic years (Lips & Feinberg, 2008). By either count, homeschooling is growing exponentially.
In school I've pushed myself to do as well I can and academic success is what I take pride in. Already in my first year of upper secondary school I was involved with a lot of different projects in the school, such as a few international school exchanges and our schools own environment campaigns. In my second year I was privileged to get to do an exchange year in Scotland. During my year there I learned a lot about myself and fell in love with the Scottish culture. Since I was put into the last grade in high school I also did exams. I studied advanced higher music, math and English. Of these I completed half of my music certificate and for math and English I sat the exams. It was an interesting look into the way how schools outside of what I'm used to work. Since in Finland upper secondary school is already very free and we have to take responsibility for our own studies going from that to, the strict and monitored in comparison, high school environment was a challenge. It taught me a great deal about adapting to different situations. After returning to Finland I got even more involved in school activities than I ever was and I even went around classes talking about my experience abroad and encouraging others to go as well. I did half of my final exams during autumn and the rest of them are up this spring. Though daunting I'm taking them on as any other obstacle and doing my
I am knowledgeable about different subjects and am prepared to start working towards my career goal. While the education experience I received from elementary school and middle school was mediocre, I believe that my high school experience could have been more effective in regards to my education. If I were not required to take specific courses, I would have had the opportunity to take more classes that were centered around my interests and future goals. Also, if classes included more engaging activities and avoided sedentary learning, more students would be interested and focused in their classes. My education was not perfect, however I believed that I have made the most of it. I am confident that my education will provide a strong basis for my
I performed my community service with Habitat for Humanity. The non‐profit organization chooses the applicant that purchases the house and Habitat only charges them the cost of the materials. Almost every worker is a volunteer so Habitat for Humanity does not have to pay a high amount of wages. I felt good about myself being one of those volunteers. The future owner of the house had to work on it too. They are...
