I like to believe that being Canadian means that I am different than other people from other countries, I like to believe that we are strong and just because we are young doesn’t mean we are not. I also like to believe that we are unpredictable. In my life I have always been interested in learning about the world and history. From this I have learned that me going to school every day is something I have for being Canadian it is different than other countries. I have gotten a hard work ethic because by being Canadian there are smart people that I have to compete with to be successful, I have to persevere. I never thought I would be taking a grade 12 university English, but I had two grade 8 teachers who believed in me. They told me that I am smart and if I took applied I would be bored. My teacher told me that I would probably get 60’s I’ve gotten 70’s. I have spent my entire High school career trying to prove that I am smart, I work hard and making honour roll my first semester felt like the Canadians taking the ridge, I did what most people can’t do. Vimy Ridge is much more than a battle, it is about a country coming together, a country of many different people. But that has everything to do with my worldviews, because I believe that it tells the story of every Canadian. That battle is what allows us to speak english and french, if that battle wouldn’t have been succeeded who know’s if the allies would have won the war. In grade 10 history I learned all about Vimy Ridge, that class taught me that to be Canadian means to be yourself. Vimy, the Battle Of Kitchener Woods, and Passchendaele are three things that taught me that Canada is a place to be proud of, that we went into a war that wasn’t ours and made the enemy think what are these people. Our youngness defeated them but that is also what the british believed made us weak. That to me, makes me want to use all of my weaknesses as strengths. This is why the Battle of Vimy Ridge wasn’t the birth of Canada itself, but the birth of our legacy- the ‘true’ origin of our nation. Planning is one of the, if not the most, important element of war. This is why the hard-work Canadian military forces put into planning for the attack on Vimy Ridge earned the nation much deserved respect in the eyes of other countries around the world. Germany captured Vimy Ridge early in the war and made it into a strong defensive position, consisting of a huge system of tunnels and trenches manned by soldiers with machine guns and artillery pieces.

This battle confirmed Canada’s eligibility to participate on the world stage and that they are not to be trifled with by other nations. It was only by the suggestion of the Prime Minister at the time, William Lyon Mackenzie King, that the World War I monument be built at Vimy Ridge. To this day, the Vimy Memorial is remembered as a monument that shows Canadian spirit and that displays the true extent of our soldiers’ courage. The Vimy Memorial is pictured on the $20 bill, has been commemorated in song, and it is symbolic as one of the greatest victories that Canada has ever had. It is one of many true displays of what it means to be Canadian. There are also many people in my community who recognize the sacrifice of the Canadian men who went to fight at Vimy Ridge. One very recent example of this is a march that was performed by the Burlington Air Cadets of the 715 Mohawk Squadron. This group led a 3600 metre march across some parts of Burlington to honour the 3600 men who gave their lives to take Vimy Ridge. This march started at their legion and it ended at City Hall and it wasn’t only the Cadets who were marching, many people took the time that day to go and march with the Cadets. There is also a Burlington Cenotaph where the lives of those who fought at Vimy Ridge and other World War I battles are inscribed. Canadian commanders learned many experiences from their past battles and they used their knowledge so they can innovative a battle plan. This time Canada was trying to take over the German stronghold on Vimy Ridge. “The Canadians had to get through three lines of German trenches, a network of a tunnel, series of machine gun bunkers and several kilometers of barbed wire so they could reach the ridge. Canadians knew that getting by these kinds of things would require a careful planning and that is why Canadians begin organizing the attack about six months earlier. Some of their engineers drew up some plans and supervised the construction of eleven tunnels so that the Canadian soldiers can use them without getting hurt” (Canada at War. Weigl Educational Publishers Limited, p.22). Canadian soldiers began to rehear the plan that they made so that they are ready for every situation they would run into.
Canada went against all odds when they decided to take a stab at the ridge as 2 powerful nations failed before them. The victory of the ridge benefited Canada in 2 ways; Canada was finally seen as a strong, independent, and smart colony that would do as much as they can to help the war efforts, and the victory of the ridge was then known as Canada’s easter gift to France. Another battle that Canada was involved in was the battle of D-Day. The battle started June 6, 1944 and ended that same day. Canada was assigned to a 8 km stretch of Normandy Beach known as Juno Beach. “Early in the morning… ships ferrying 150 000 American, British, and Canadian troops across the channel to Normandy”. “14 000 Canadians a part of the Operation Overload landed on Juno Beach that day”. Canadian troops did not have an easy time capturing Juno as they were faced with, concrete bunkers, barbed wire barriers, landmines, and massive anti tank defences which were defended by strong German troops. Canada has become a superior nation thru, perseverance, courage and even care as they persevered thru many dark battles, and made sure they all came thru together as a unit other than individuals.
