Becoming a civilized person required an education about the world around us. One must obtain an education to live in today’s society and live in America. Typically, the average school system consists of elementary school starting at five years old for six years, then middle school for three years, and finally high school for four years. During these years, a student gains an understanding of the world around us and how to live in a high-functioning society. While many children around the world do not have the guaranteed privilege of receiving an education, I was fortunate enough to go to school. Reflecting back on this most crucial part of my education, I have realized countless factors that have benefited me and have worked against me. First, the most beneficial part of high school was the variety of classes available to students. There were classes offered that catered to a multitude of interests such as medicine, engineering, marketing, and even graphic design. These classes helped me pursue my interests in medicine and choose my future career. In high school, the classes are aimed to pinpoint career interests and hopefully prepare students for post high school education and training. Another advantageous characteristic of high school is that students are treated with more respect and are granted more freedoms than previous schools. In high school, students have the privilege to participate in sports and clubs and can drive to school. Unfortunately, the unpleasant factors outweigh the benefits of high school. While there are classes geared toward specific interests, students are also forced to take certain classes in order to graduate. These requirements are often irrelevant to a student’s interests. For example, a student interested in business should not be required to take an art class. While some would argue that these requirements expose students to different subjects, I do not believe that these should be required to receive a diploma. …show more content…

I am knowledgeable about different subjects and am prepared to start working towards my career goal. While the education experience I received from elementary school and middle school was mediocre, I believe that my high school experience could have been more effective in regards to my education. If I were not required to take specific courses, I would have had the opportunity to take more classes that were centered around my interests and future goals. Also, if classes included more engaging activities and avoided sedentary learning, more students would be interested and focused in their classes. My education was not perfect, however I believed that I have made the most of it. I am confident that my education will provide a strong basis for my
