Why Do People Live In Poverty

Over half the world's population is living in poverty. This means that over 3 billion people are living in poverty and 305,000 of these people are in New Zealand. Every day children are having to live in cold, damp overcrowded rooms because they don't have a permanent address and they don't have a place to call home. Many of these children have no access to nutritional food or water. Others have little access to food in general, going hungry for days on end.
For many people in New Zealand, it is a struggle to get by. Not being able to provide themselves and their children, with basic needs such as health care or sufficient amounts of food for their families. For many parents, including single mothers and fathers, this ongoing struggle is due to the amount of income that is being earned. Research shows that poverty does not only poison children, it damages areas of developing brains, that are important to succeed in areas of reading, thinking and languages causing children to struggle to learn.

This family is the Saitu family. They live in a damp motel with 4 children, two of which have disabilities. One child is severely autistic and another disabled, this means that these children need special education and care. However, this is much too costly for the family, therefore they can't afford the care that they specifically need. Depending on where the are on the spectrum, will depend on the care that they need. For many children that have autism, they need a caregiver 24/7. Census Data suggests that 5.4 percent of New Zealand's population has residential care, with a majority of these carers being women.
