Assessments Matter to Instruction So often in classroom environments teachers ask the age old question, “Does anyone have any questions” and so often the same response is given, “Silence”, which in turn the teacher moves on to the next topic. “Classrooms are in constant motion”, therefore, if teachers do not routinely and thoroughly check for clear understanding from their students, then not only are they not in sync with the student’s learning but also some students may be left behind unknowingly (Newman, 2013). Likewise, summative assessments are what most teachers are engrossed upon right now, which leaves many racing through curriculums. Teachers are able to examine a student’s learning and determine what additional steps to embark upon through assessments of student’s performance. However, analyzing only student’s data and performance will not provide an overall picture of a school’s educational system. “Assessments provide more than just data for a point in time, but serve as actionable information for all individuals—from students to teachers, administrators, and community stakeholders” (Newman, 2013, p. 11). Evaluation and assessments provides significant information that can ultimately improve the overall quality of education. Quality education is the end result of dedication, persistence, and sacrifices from everyone including students, teachers, parents, and leaders within the school system. There are several different types of assessments; diagnostic, formative, summative, norm-referenced, criterion-referenced, and interim/benchmark. Undoubtedly, “there are a range of uses for assessments but arguably, the most important element of an assessment is how it guides the learner and teacher in the next steps of the learning process” (Newman, 2013, p. 11.1). Moreover, assessments affect vital and key decisions in regards to grades, advancement, instructional needs, and the curriculum. Assessments inspire teachers to ask themselves such questions as are the students learning and are there other ways or avenues to teach a particular subject better. These questions along with others help promote better learning. Also, assessments not only help students with the basics of reading and math skills, but also skills that will allow them to face a continually changing world. With attention to the classroom environment, signs of improvement indicate a student is learning. Both pre and post assessments will be given to the students to determine what knowledge the students had both before and after the learning experience.
